First of all, from the very bot

my wife and myself, sincere
thanks to everyone who’s been
so nice to us. We’ve received
cards, notes and thoughts from
our good friends at the Eden

everyone we know here in town.
These ‘ messages of condolence
on the passing away of my fath

warm thanks to everyone for
being so very, very nice.

SELF DISCIPLINE—WHY?
International Sunday School
Lesson for May 28, 1961.
Memory Selection: “The fruit
of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self con

Lesson Text: Proverbs 2; 7:
1-5; 14; 29-30; 16:32; 17:27; 20:1;
23:19-21; 29-35.
Today the object of our discus
sion is that of self-control as a
most desirable Christian virtue.
Why should we discipline our
selves? The answer to this
question depends largely upon
who we think we are. If we
think of ourselves as just an
o'he- form of animal life, mo
tivated by the great forces of
Nature, then we might do only
what comes naturally. But we
are more than animals. We are
human beings with spiritual as
pirations, and to deny this is to
deny our real existence. We dis
cipline ourselves, therefore, to
attain these ends.
No thinking Christian will
doubt, for one minute, that

The consumption of alcohol,

To*al abstinence has long ex

Christian church towards drink

many reasons that make this
view a very logical one. In the
first place, drinking is fraught
with danger to the personality.
It is a psychological crutch of the
habit-forming variety. Many
who started out as purely “so

the habit gripped them without
mercy.
Another reason for abstinence
is that we may influence others
who are weaker than ourselves.

What is the story behind this “For Sale” sign?
Is it just a house that’s for sale, or is this a tale
of happiness or sorrow—of success or defeat?
Let’s hope this story has a happy ending! But
this isn’t a world of make-believe we live in. God
piade us human beings, not puppets. He has given
us minds and bodies, nerves and muscles—and
weakness as well as strength.
Maybe the story behind this house is a happy
one. Maybe it’s a sad one. Regardless, the people
who lived here, like all of us, will be able to
accept both good fortune and bad if there is yet
another house in their lives.
The House of the Lord, the Church, has been
built to endure through the ages. Here we will
always have a home—during our lives on earth
as well as throughout eternity.

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . ..
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church is the greatest factor on
earth for the building of character and
good citizenship. It is a storehouse of
spiritual values. Without a strong Church,
neither democracy nor civilization can
survive. There are four sound reasons
why every person should attend services
regularly and support the Church. They
are: (I) For his own sake. (< 2 ) For his
children’s sake. (3) For the sake of his
community and nation. (4) For the sake
of the Church itself, which needs his
moral and material support. Plan to go
to church regularly and read your Bible
daily.
