Four Leaders In
Fishing Contest j
Continued from Page I—Section 1
Jimmy Ashley with a 3-pound,
10-oz. bass.
The present leader in this di
vision is still a long way from
the winner in last year's contest
which was an 8 Vi-pound entry
measuring 25% inches caught in
Yeopim Creek by Alva Bunch of
Hertford.
The top fish in the speckled
perch (crappie) division is still
ane caught by Willie Bunch of
Edenton in the Chowan River
using a minnow as bait. Bunch’s
crappie weighed 1-lb. 4-ozs. Last
year the winning entry was
caught in Yeopim Creek by A.
C. Griffin, Edenton. This was
a whopper weighing 1-lb. 11-ozs.,
and measuring 14 inches. The
bait used in this case was
6hrimp.
The heaviest fish caught in
the bream division was caught
by George Lewis. It weighed
14 ounces and was 10 inches in
length. Earl W. Bunch recently
caught a total of 18, the heaviest
of which weighed 12 ounces with
an average weight of 10 ounces, i
In the 1960 fishing contest, the!
prize bream weighed exactly 1 j
pound. It was hooked by Julian;
Tadlock of Elizabeth City who!
was fishing in Yeopim Creek.
Bennett’s Mill Pond, Edenton, is
a bream “hot-spot”.
In the rock fish division it is j
believed the winner is yet to
be heard from. The rock to be
beaten is one caught by H. M.
Phthisic, a 5%-pounder caught
in the Chowan River. The run
ner-up is a 5%-pounder boated
in Yeopim Creek by Alva Bunch
of Hertford. L. W. Stallings of
Edenton has entered a 3Vi -
pound rock.
R. E. Forehand, Chairman of
the Recreation Committee, re
minds sportsmen that there is
less than a month to go in the
Spring Fishing Contest. Con
testants to receive prizes in the
various divisions should have
their catches recorded at the fol
lowing weighing stations in
Edenton: Milton Bunch's Gulf
Service Station, Byrum Hard
ware Store, Hughes-Parker Hard
ware Store, Edenton Marina,
Bell’s Store and Western Auto
Associate Store.
The Edenton area offers good
fishing in both open and protect
ed water. It also offers top
boating facilities, bathing and
water skiing areas.
We shall never have more
time. We have, and have al
ways had, all the time there is.
—Arnold Bennett.

in the latter category, those who
have expressed interest are May
or John A. Mitchener, Jr., Sher
iff Earl Goodwin, Edenton Police
Chief George Dail and Fire Chief
W. J. Yates, it was learned.
“Within six months after or-i
ganization of the Edenton CAPj
senior unit,” Ehringhaus said,
“we should be ready to open
membership in the squadron to
cadets. The national cadet pro
gram of the CAP is for the
youngsters of high school age
who are interested in aviation
and in learning all they can of
the aerospace educational pro
gram in which the Civil Air Pa
trol can assist them. As much
stress is given to the cadet pro
gram as to the senior program,
but the Edenton senior squadron
will first need to establish it
self with trained personnel and
equipment before the cadet pro
gram can be successfully at-1
tempted.”
Future plans indicate 'that
quarters and meeting room will
be available for the Edenton
CAP unit on the recently ac
quired Edenton municipal air
port, and with the excellent op
erational facilities of the airport
itself the local unit should de
velop into one of the better
units in Group 111. There are
1 seven groups of the North Caro-
I lina Wing under Colonel Donald
! Denton, Commander, based in
Charlotte. The CAP in a na
tional emergency would function
as a part of the N. C. State Civil
Defense organization.
