PRISCILLA CARR E BUNCH REBECCA ANNE HARRELL Seven Chowan County girls! are scheduled to participate i.n: the “Miss Albemarle” Pageant 1 which will be held at the Caro-! lina Theater in Elizabeth City tonight (Thursday) and Friday i night at 8 o’clock. The pageant is sponsored ’by the Elizabeth i City Junior Chamber of Com-1 merce, with the winner eligible to compete in the “Miss North Carolina” contest to be held at Guilford College in July. Among the judges will be La verne (Cousin Tibbie) Watson, i WTAR television star. The seven local girls in the contest, all 1961 graduates of John A. Holmes and Chowan High Schools, are: Janet Faye Hendrix, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Hendrix of Tyner. Judith Ann Israel, daughter of Mrs. Ruth N. Israel. Mildred Gordon Price, daugh ter of Mrs. Myda W. Price. Mary Anne Overton, daugh ter of Mrs. Juanita Overton. Priscilla Carrie Bunch, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. John N. j Bunch. The winner will receive a SIOO scholarship to the college of her choice or enrolled in a model or charm school course. Also a trip to Guilford with expenses paid for chaperone and escort. W. Hudson. Mrs. Hud son learned to make a master mix at a Home Demonstration Club meeting. Mrs. Elsie Edwards, assistant home economics agent in Tyr rell County, says Faith makes drop cookies using the basic master mix. Since she is tak ing food preparation as a 4-H project, she is glad to show her neighbors how to make the mix. Kitchen Workshops “More efficient and conveni ent kitchens are being planned by homemakers in Randolph County,” says Mrs. Virginia Smith, assistant home economics agent. “At a recent workshop, tihe woman discussed location, arrangement, building materials and convenient storage.” Mrs. Smith says the homemak ers are planning for file cabi nets, Lazy Susans, pull out drawers for pots and pans and other labor saving devices. Civil Defense Mrs. Howard Griffin of Cen eerville Club in Franklin Coun ty gave a demonstration at her local club meeting on civil de fense. Mrs. Lillie Mae Dean, home economics agent, reports Mrs. Griffin bought enough food to last two weeks for one person. She also discussed the import ance of having canned food on hand for emergencies. Negro Home Demonstration News By MRS. ONNIK S. CHARLTON, County Negro Home Economics A^ent Chowan County Health King and Queen Wednesday, May 31, at the 4-H Health Coronation Program held at the Edenton High School, Roberta Nixon, from Triangle community was crowned Queen of Health and Timothy Davis of Edenton, was crowned King of Health. Runners-up were Joe Ann Austin and Diane Copeland, Shelton Badham, Ronald Nor man and Joseph Sawyer. Dr. Andrew A. Best of Green ville, N. C., was guest speaker. Emphasizing the fact that the health “H” is essential to pro gress with the Head, the Heart and the Hands, Dr. Best gave a very helpful message on the six objectives of the “H” for Health. 1. To help boys and girls to have as attractive appearance as they can. 2. To help boys and girls to be able to enjoy the activities of young people and be accept able in their groups. 3.
