Article Exposes Advertising
Schemes To Trick Youngsters
The innocence of childhood
daily is being tested by ex
posure to “the roughest huck
stering techniques developed by
the advertising industry,” ac
cording to Changing Times, the
Kiplinger Magazine.
An article in the ourrent is
sue of the magazine deals with
the schemes that have evolved
in recent years to get hold of
youngsters’ nickels, dimes and
dollars through ads in their fav
orite reading material comic
books and teen-age magazines.
“Many publishers do keep
tight control of the advertising
they accept in order to weed
out the slick deals,” 'the article
notes. “The Post Office and
Federal Trade Commission are
also constantly on the lookout
for fraudulent and deceptive
practices. Yet even these bar
riers cannot stop all quick
footed sales outfits.”
The magazine checked with
government officials, publishers,
advertising men and child spe
cialists to determine how wide
spread the problem is. In ad
dition, staff members answered
ads in representative publica
tions, using themselves and their
children as guinea pigs.
“What these efforts unearthed
is a depressing collection,” the
editors report. They found “ser
vices that prey on youngsters’
ambition to make something of
themselves; will-o’-t'he-wisp ‘free’
products; sly devices to push
children into buying something

Among items ordered by the
magazine staff members was “a
real mobile tank” for “only
4.98” which turned out to be
cardboard sections, which had
to be assembled by inserting
cardboard tabs on each part into
slits in the others.
Other ads followed up by the
magazine were for contests that
are not contests but sales gim

stamps, poems to set to music

airlines jobs.
“Although the teen-ager may
be nicked for many more dol

every child duped by a slick ad

thing in terms of his attitude

cludes. “Childhood is a time of
