The Rev. and Mrs. Bomar Luther Raines of Kings Mountain,
N. C„ announce the engagement of their daughter. Miss Margaret
Elizabeth Raines, to Stephen Ross Burch, Jr. Mr. Burch is the
son of Mrs. Marguerite Bunch Burch of Edenton and the late Mr.
Burch of Oak Hall, Va. Miss Raines is a student at Meredith
College. Mr. Burch is a law student at the University of North
Carolina. He is a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. The
wedding is planned for Sunday. August 27.

ing the county cooperating with
the N. C. Department of Agri
culture's commodity distribution
program. Chairman W. E. Bond
explained that an appropriation
is made to care for those in ab
solute need and it was the
opinion of the Commissioners
that the cost of administering
the program would be out of
proportion to what good will be
accomplished. He also stated
that only 34 of North Carolina’s
100 counties are cooperating in
the program.

play, “Mrs. Wiggs of the Cab
bage Patch,” which netted
$10.30; a program for the cere
mony in laying the cornerstone;
a copy of the invitation sent to

The story as it appeared fol
lows;
“The Bell Battery Chapter,
Daughters of the Confederacy,
invite all children in the Town
of Edenton and the County of
Chowaa to take part in the cere
monies on the occasion of the
laying of the cornerstone of the
Confederate monument an June
3rd.
‘On that day they are re
quested >to be dressed in the
colors of the Confederacy, the
girls to wear white dresses with
red cheese cloth sashes and the
boys wear white shirtwaist and
sashes and all carry flowers.
After the services the children
will be classed in divisions and
escorted to the different burying
grounds, there to decorate the
graves of the heroes of the war.
“Parents are earnestly solicit
ed to cooperate with the chap
ter and have their children
dressed in time to assemble on
the Academy Green promptly at
eleven o’clock, on that date.
“All children are also re
quested to be at the Academy
this Saturday at 5 o’clock to
practice songs for June 3rd.
“All citizens who can sing are
asked to be at the Academy on
Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock to
practice patriotic airs which will
be sung on June 3rd. On that
day papers with the songs print
ed thereon will be distributed
and unanymous chorus is mast
earnestly desired. There is no
glory too great to be rendered
unto the men of the Confeder
ate Army.
“The living are brave and no
one but the dead are bravest of
all.
“Merchants are requested to
close their stores and all busi
ness to suspend during the ser
vices.
“June the 3rd is the annivers
ary of the birth of President
Jefferson Davis, the chieftain of
the immortal cause, and unto
him may honor be given. Un
der his administration our men
offered up their lives that we
might live in glory in the pur
ity of a spotless name.
