PAGE EIGHT r— section two THIS IS THE LAW By ROBERT E. LEE (For the N. C. Bar Association) Bar Associations What is the North Carolina Bar Association? It is a voluntary association of lawyers in the State of North Carolina. The North Carolina Bar Asso ciation is not an agency of the State. It is an autonomous body. The members can meet and deliberate at will on any subject. Every member has the same right to be heard and his vote counts as much as that ofj •every other member . It is a forum to which lawyers] can go once a year, for a period of three days, to air their views and to discuss current problems affecting the profession. It is the organization which lawyers have frequently used to sponsor, improvement in the administra-J tion of justice. The work of the Association is! performed for the most part by committees. Three times each year the As sociation sponsors, in cooperation with the law schools of the University of North Carolina, Duke, and Wake Forest, insti tutes for practicing attorneys on current legal problems. These institutes keep the practicing at torneys up-to-date on changes in! the law. The Association has its own legal publication. The article which you are now reading is a public serivee spon sored by the North Carolina Bar Association. It was designed to 1 better acquaint the non-lawyerj with our basic laws and the! courts. The Association was organized in 1899. Is the North Carolina Bar As sociation the same as the North Carolina State Bar? No. The two organizations are separate and distinct. Functioning as a State agen cy, the management of the State Bar affairs is vested in its Coun cil. The members of the State Ba do not have any voice in it." decisions. They have nothing t( do with the promulgation of its rules and regulations, except in directly in choosing the members of the Council. The annual meeting of th> State Bar is a one-day session and is always held in Raleigi on the fourth Friday in October The State Bar, through it.‘ Council, has exclusive jurisdic tion over such matters as ad mission to the bar, discipline disbarment and restoration of li censes.
