4 Japanese Beetle: The 1961 'in
flux of Japanese Beetle has in
vaded our domain. Unless this
destructive insect is controlled
from the beginning it can do
considerable damage to vegeta
bles, fruit and ornamentals.
Some field crops, particularly
corii silks, are favored. The
time to strike the invader is
RIGHT NOW.
Extension Leaflet No. 72 en
titled “Vegetable Insect Control”
and Extension Leaflet No. 59
entitled “Flower and Shrub In
sect Control” include control
measures for Japanese Beetle as
well as various other insects at
tacking these crops. These pub
lications are available at our
office. Some insecticides recom
mended for the control of Jap
anese Beetle are Methoxychlor,
DDT, and lead arsenate for or
namentals. Methoxychlor and
DDT may be used on most vege
tables but not within three
weeks of harvest. When you
, come closer to the harvest pe
riod than three weeks, use a 4%
rotenone spray which is non
poisonous to human beings.
Nematodes in Peanuts: Several
peanut fields are showing nema
tode infestation by plant stunt
ing. This may be observed in
a few plants in spotted areas, in
large spots and even large areas
in the field. During the last
two weeks I have been called to
several fields and found nema
todes the problem.
The only control for the grow
ing grow is the proper applica
tion of Nemagon soil fumigant.
The fumigant should be applied
at the rate of one gallon to one
and one-half gallons of actual
material per acre. Fumizone
44E is a 25% material. There
fore, it would be necessary to
apply four gallons to equal one
gallon of actual material per
acre. Fumizone TOE is a 50%
material which would require
the application of two gallons to
get one gallon of actual mate
rial per acre. The material is
emulsifiable and should have
enough water added to make an
application of at least five or
more gallons of the mixture per
acre. The material Should be
applied on both sides of the
plants, six inches from the
plants and about four or five
. inches deep.
* When infestation is found, the
sooner the soil fumigant is ap
plied the more effective it will
be and the greater will be the
results. Four years ago, soil
fumigant applied to an infested
field about this time resulted in
an increased yield of about 600
pounds per acre as compared
with an untreated check plot.

accidents caused 84 deaths while
motor vehicles accounted for 81
deaths. AH other accidents
claimed the lives of 35 North
Carolina residents.
For the first three months of
1961, the accident toll is 593
deaths, just slightly less than
the t 011—613 deaths—for the cor
responding three months in 1960.
During the three month period,
motor vehicle accidents caused
253 deaths; home and farm ac
cidents, 235 deaths, all other ac
cidents, 105 deaths.
Report Cotton Failure: Grow
ers who have had cotton failure
should be sure to report the
acreage of cotton failure to the
ASC field supervisor when he
visits the farm. This will give
the grower credit for his cotton
acreage just the same as if the
cotton was growing. Failure to
report cotton failure may result
in the loss of allotment.
Feed Grain Program: Accord
ing to Handy West, ASC Office
Manager, the following partici
pation by Chowan County farm
ers has resulted. Approximately
one-half of the farmers in Cho
wan County have signed agree
ments to participate this year.
A total of 4300 acres of corn
land has been signed up for di
version. This means that about
32% of the normal corn acre
age in Chowan County has been
diverted from production this
year. It appears that our farm
ers are cooperating nicely with
the new agricultural administra
tion in trying to reduce the feed
grain surplus.

the entire state of North Caro
lina will check over 300,000 al
lotments with a total acreage of
well over a million ar,d a half
acres.
The work of the reporter is
only part of the performance
check. The reporter outlines the
planted acreage on an aerial
photograph, and that photograph
is returned to the ASC county
office where the acreage is com
puted by the county office staff.
The acreage is computed through
the use of a planimeter, an in
strument which accurately com
putes the area outlined. No
tices of measures acreage will
be mailed currently after June
16th. The county office will be
unable to give out measured
acreages prior to the date no
tices are mailed.
