You Cannot Escape God
By TERRY JONES
For I acknowledge my trans
gressions; and my sin is ever be
fore me. Psalm 51:3. i
Have you ever wondered
where God is? Is He is Heav
en, somewhere in the clouds, or
is He on earth? God is every 1
where.
Have you ever done anything
wrong and then tried to forget
it but could not? We can't es
cape from ourselves, and it is
just as hard to escape from God.
You can climb the highest moun
tain, or go to the very depths
of the sea and God is there.
You can travel as fast and as
far as you possibly can, or you
can lose yourself from everyone
you know in a large city, but
God is still there. You can try
to forget God by living a care
free life of worldiness and sin, j
but He is ever before you con
victing you down in your heart.
There is a still small voice in
your life beckoning to you.
Christ is asking you that are
heavy laden to cast every sin
and burden on Him and trust
Him to save you—not to try to
save yourself. I
You can’t escape God’s call
to you. Jonah felt the call of
God and he tried to escape by
going to another land. Os
course he failed. God sent a

Ever since John Hancock put

At least six countries have

several nations have found the
hottest month of the year a good
time to relinquish control will

The Dutch may have started
the trend. They declared them

FACTS CONCERNING THE SCHOOL BOND ISSUE FOR JULY 11th
CITY AND COUNTY SCHOOLS BOND ELECTION
REASONS WHY WE SHOULD VOTE FOR THE SCHOOL ISSUE
1. Chowan High School needs two extra classrooms, lunchroom, and
covered walkways. Extra classrooms are needed to provide space to
reduce the number of children in each classroom and to provide spe
cial education for those children not being as fortunate as some oth
ers. The present lunchroom is an old wood building that does not
lend itself to adequate repair. Covered walkways are necessary to
protect children from the rain and had weather when going from
one building to another.
MONEY FOR A NEW AUDITORIUM IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE
BOND ISSUE.
Both white high schools may or may not he consolidated in the fu
ture. The two extra classrooms, lunchroom, and covered walkways
ARE NECESSARY for grades one through eight whether consolida
tion lakes place or not.
2. Edenton High School (Colored) needs eight extra classrooms, voca
tional agriculture and industrial arts classroom and shop, drainage
and landscaping, and covered walkways. Edenton High School was
overcrowded by three classrooms this past school year. The school
is growing at the rate of one classroom each year. The State Depart
ment of Public Instruction has allotted two extra teachers for the
Edenton High School this fall. The St. John’s school building has
been condemned and two teachers and students there will be moved
to the Edenton High School by order from Raleigh. Eight classrooms
are necessary to meet the needs as outlined.

great storm upon the sea so that
Jonah’s ship was about to be
, wrecked. Jonah knew it was
his fault and he told the ship’s
crew. They cast him into the
sea and the storm ceased. Jonah
was swallowed by a great fish.
!He remained inside the fish
three days and nights. Jonah
was delivered from the fish and
then he carried out God’s will
to preach to the city of Ninevah,
and was a success.
Let us notice three things
about this story that may be
applied to our lives today. (1)
Jonah refused to listen to God’s
will for his life and tried to
escape. (2) He was punished.
(3) God had mercy on him and
gave him another chance in
life.
| (1) God is calling you from
your life of sin to repent and
to look unto Jesus with all your
sin and strife. (2) If you fail
God’s will in your life, as Jonah
first did, you will be punished.
(3) If you repent and turn to
Christ, God will have mercy on
you and open a new world in
1 Jesus for you.
You can’t escape God, but you
can escape sin by trusting Christ
as your saviour and making Him
Lord or ruler of your life.

Some years ago a young man

From the day he took his vows,

described as “holy terrors.”
They had baffled every teacher

parents. Despite the fact that
the young teacher was working
hard on a full-time job at low
pay to support his family, and
trying to complete requirements
for a doctor of philosophy de

stayed with them until they

3. John A. Holmes High School needs a boys’ dressing room for physical
education and athletics. This dressing room will be built into the
present gymnasium.
The high school building HAS NOT DETERIORATED RAPIDLY.
The proposed school bond nioney will not be spent to repair the
high school building because it is not in need of other than normal
maintenance and because school bond money may only be spent for
new construction.
Former Governor Luther Hodges has encouraged us to
give greater support to our schools on the local level. We
cannot afford to, nor should we, wait on the Federal Gov
