The Power Os Speech
By TEFiI.Y JONES
Sat a watch, O Lord, before my

—Psalm 141:3.
of the most powerful ob
jects known to man is found in
his own body—the tongue. The
tongue' is a wonderful organ.
It can be used to bring words
of comfort to the grieved, words
of cerhfidence to the low in
spirit,.’ and words gs praise to
the just.
Janies takes a different view
of the matter, he says no man
can tame his tongue, for it is
an unruly evil, full of deadly
poison (James 3:8). These words
are well represented by truth in
our world, even in our own town
and community. Many tongues
have been used for gossip and
backbiting. Wagging tongues
jhave broken up happy homes
&jid .left .innocent children with
out parents united together.
Wagging tongues have caused
people to be disgraced for little
or no cause at all. Many people
actually enjoy grouping up and
tearing down someone else in
the sight of others. Surelv that
powerful, evil force known as
Satanyis using them.
Let ’us see what Christ has
to say about idle tongues. Mat
thew 12:36-37 states that every
idle word that men shall speak
will Be given account of on the
day of judgment. Jesus says by
your words will you be justi
fied or condemned. The kind of
language a person uses shows

A few random thoughts: First
of all, my congratulations to the
many already offered to Gil
liam Wood on his well-deserved
appointment. WCDJ will be in
terviewing him on his new du
ties. Did you ever, in the last
few years, see anyone pushing
the old-fashioned lawn-mower?
Just a thought. Prison work
gangs have be_-n busy in and
around Edenton lately, doing
road-work. Look-alikes: Sv Bak

look promising being contracted
to RCA Victor. Negro residents
of an integrated section in
Hempstead, New York, have a
campaign going to keep a largely,
white area from becoming pre
dominantly Negro. Still a lot i
of fuss on television violence as
the taxpayers money goes into
arguments on the quality of that
medium. I still like Will Rog
ers’ quote on radio, which also
can apply to television: “I have
no sympathy for anyone too lazy
to turn off a radio set”.
Movie notes: Deborah Walley,
the new Gidget in “Gidget Goes
Hawaiian,” was chosen for the
coveted role over 150 other girls.
Only 19, she’s an ex Ice Ca
pades star. Wotta cast in the
latest army comedy, “Last Time
I Saw Archie”. There’s Robert
Mitchum, Jack Webb, Louis Nye,
Don Knotts, Del Moore, Joe
Flynn, James Lydon, Robert
Strauss, Harvey Lembeek. There
you have some of the top co
medians in show-business today.
For beauty, there’s Martha Hyer
and France Nuyen. While one
skating star has turned to act
ing in Gidget Goes Hawaiian,”
another appears as the star of,
“Snow White and the Three!
Stooges.” She’s lovely Carol I
Heiss, five time world figure!
skating champion. Walt Disney l
considers Hayley Mills, star of
his movie, “Parent Trap,” to be
the finest young talent in at
least 25 years. Actor Nehemiah
Persoff, one of the stars of “The
Big Show,” is married to his
own cousin. A quite distant re
lation, of course. Her name is
Tia. The role of a Mexican of
ficer in the movie “Alamo” is
portrayed by Carlos Arruza,
world-famous bullfighter.
Closing Thought: Everyone is
eloquent in his own cause.
Where?

The ticket agent looked
through his stubs carefully.
Scratched his head and went j
through them once more with
no success. “Where is Belinda?”
Colored Lady—“ Where is she?
Why she’s sittin’ ever dar on a

MATTHEW: SALVATION FOR
THE OUTCAST
international Sunday School
Lesson for July 16
Memory Selection: “He left
everything, and rose And fol

Lesson Text: Matthew 9:9-13;
10:1-4; Luke 5:27-32.
Pursuing our study of “Lives
That Speak for Christ,” the pur
pose of this unit being to show
some of the qualities that are
necessary for ‘people who would
live as true followers of Christ,
our question for today is: How
can Christians more effectively
minister to persons or groups of
persons who are often neg
lected?
Reading the lessons prescribed
for today, we see that Jesus’
healing and forgiveness of the
paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8) is an
effective preface to the call of
Matthew, the outcast, who was
paralyzed in terms of usefulness
by social ostracism, being a tax
collector —a Jew used by Rome
for the exploitation of his coun
trymen.

the paralytic, and the faith and
efforts to aid him given un
stintingly by his friends, and al
so from our own experience,
that physical affliction so often
excites pity and the impulse to
help. But equally tragic wounds
of the spirit are inflicted on
people by society, as in the case
of Matthew. Too often these
social ills are taken for granted
and left unattended. And yet
social ostracism may wound
and ‘paralyze more painfully
than physical illness. JesuS'’
pity for the paralytic and for
Matthew shows his complete
understanding of suffering and
his reverence for personality
that leveled all barriers to re
demptive love. Jesus took the
friendless Matthew into his own
home, realizing that restoration
from social wounds requires a
healing fellowship wherein pa
; ralysis of soul is remedied and
| the spiritual health nurtured.
! Such is the principal function of
the church, today.
So we see that Jesus not only
“called” Matthew, but he pre
pared him for apostleship by
entertaining him as a guest in
his own home. Jesus and his
■disciples often ate together.
