The Power Os Speech By TEFiI.Y JONES Sat a watch, O Lord, before my moulhf keep the door cf my lips. —Psalm 141:3. of the most powerful ob jects known to man is found in his own body—the tongue. The tongue' is a wonderful organ. It can be used to bring words of comfort to the grieved, words of cerhfidence to the low in spirit,.’ and words gs praise to the just. Janies takes a different view of the matter, he says no man can tame his tongue, for it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison (James 3:8). These words are well represented by truth in our world, even in our own town and community. Many tongues have been used for gossip and backbiting. Wagging tongues jhave broken up happy homes &jid .left .innocent children with out parents united together. Wagging tongues have caused people to be disgraced for little or no cause at all. Many people actually enjoy grouping up and tearing down someone else in the sight of others. Surelv that powerful, evil force known as Satanyis using them. Let ’us see what Christ has to say about idle tongues. Mat thew 12:36-37 states that every idle word that men shall speak will Be given account of on the day of judgment. Pursuing our study of “Lives That Speak for Christ,” the pur pose of this unit being to show some of the qualities that are necessary for ‘people who would live as true followers of Christ, our question for today is: How can Christians more effectively minister to persons or groups of persons who are often neg lected? Reading the lessons prescribed for today, we see that Jesus’ healing and forgiveness of the paralytic (Matthew 9:1-8) is an effective preface to the call of Matthew, the outcast, who was paralyzed in terms of usefulness by social ostracism, being a tax collector —a Jew used by Rome for the exploitation of his coun trymen. But equally tragic wounds of the spirit are inflicted on people by society, as in the case of Matthew. Too often these social ills are taken for granted and left unattended. And yet social ostracism may wound and ‘paralyze more painfully than physical illness. JesuS'’ pity for the paralytic and for Matthew shows his complete understanding of suffering and his reverence for personality that leveled all barriers to re demptive love. Jesus took the friendless Matthew into his own home, realizing that restoration from social wounds requires a healing fellowship wherein pa ; ralysis of soul is remedied and | the spiritual health nurtured. ! Such is the principal function of the church, today. So we see that Jesus not only “called” Matthew, but he pre pared him for apostleship by entertaining him as a guest in his own home. Jesus and his ■disciples often ate together. Continued on Page 7, Section 2 HAPPY HOME PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH HAROLD C. LEAKE.
