1 County News By MAS. ROLAND EVANS The Audrey Gordon Circle of Stocky Hock Church met Monday night, July 10, at the home of Mrs. Isaac Harrell. Mrs. Mar guerite Byrum was in charge of the program. Rocky Hock had two able and distinguished Baptist ministers to fill the pulpit on Sunday. Dr. Bruce Whitaker, president of ♦Chowan College, brought the message for-the morning service and Dr. R. W. Kicklighter, pas tor of Blackwell Memorial Bap tist Church, Elizabeth City, de livered the message for the evening service. Elton Miller ana son, Ray of Jacksonville, Fla,, spent the week-end recently with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Miller. Mrs. J. B. Spellman of Green ville 6pent Friday with Mrs. Bertha Dale. The Rev. and Mrs. Carroll Copeland of Nashville, Tenn., spent the past week with rela tives. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Cowand of v Portsmouth, Va., spent the 4th of July holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Murray Tynch, Sr. Mrs. Ollie Tynch celebrated her birthday recently with the family, present for a dinner. Mrs. Allred is a patient in Chowan Hospital. Mrs. Kate Bush is on the sick list. , \ | Mrs. Ethel Parker has been ill. Miss Becky Harrell is attend ing an RA and GA camp this week at Chowan College as a Icounsellor. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Byrum are the proud parents of a baby boy, Ray, Jr. Elton Boyce’s mother visited them recently. Mrs. Frank Miller, Sr., is home from the hospital. Mrs. J. F. Perry visited Mrs. Bristoe Perry on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Fore hand and family visited Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Perry on the fourth of July. Mrs. Lester Copeland of Ry land, entered Norfolk General Hospital Tuesday for an opera-1 tion. Mrs. Eleanor Modlin is home, 4 from.- the hospital after an ap pendectomy. Little Miss Joy Harrell, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Har well, visited Mr. and Mrs. Wil bur Hare last week. Stuart Holland has been sick recently. Chowan Home Demonstration Club met Monday, July 10, at 2:30 in Chowan Community Building. Several ladies from Chowan County will attend Farm Home Week at State College this week. The Brotherhood of Rocky Hock Church will meet tonight (Thursday) at 8 o’clock. Junior GA’s 1 and 2 will meet at the church Friday night at 8 i o’clock. Junior RA’s will meet with J. D. All have, been two five-year periods. The Councilmen also approved a lease to the Eden Motel for property on which a swimming pool has been constructed. The lease calls for a rental of S6O per year. Dfcring the meeting a resolu tion was read from the Edenton Chamber of Commerce which had to do with the establish ment of a joint planning board for Edenton and Chowan Coun ty. The Councilmen looked fav orably upon the idea, and Mayor Mitchener was instructed to con fer with W. E. Bond, chairman of the Chowan County Com missioners before any appoint ments were made. Following a recommendation of Luther Parks and A1 Phillips, the street in front of John A. Holmes High School between Freemason Street and the ar mory, was named Woodard Street. This name is in recog nition of the late J. A. Woodard for his valuable services to Edenton. For many years he was chairman of the Board of Public Works. The Councilmen waxed appre ciative and voted to send letters to Governor Terry Sanford, Gil liam Wood, Albert Byrum and Mayor Gurkin of Plymouth. The letter to Governor Sanford is to express appreciation of Town Council for his appointment of Gilliam Wood to the State High way Commission. The letter to Gilliam Wood was to congratulate him upon his appointment. The purpose of writing Mr. Byrum was to express Town awnings conform to the architecture of any home! During the meeting Mayor Mitchener read a letter from Gilliam Wood which had this to! say: ,“Your active interest in my re cent appointment to the N. C. Highway Commission is certain ly appreciated. Your work and support means a great deal to me and is gratefully acknowl edged. I want to do a good job for the first highway division and will try to see that your confidence is justified. Please express this to the Council, too.” Before the meeting adjourned, the Councilmen discussed tear ing down the old Willis ware house. George A. Byrum was instructed to try to contact any body who will remove the build ing for the materials that could be salvaged. If nobody will! agree to tear down the building under these terms, it was decid ed to set fire to it under the direction of the fire department.
