Frankly Speaking

“The Parent Trap,” which re
< cently played at the Taylor
w Theatre has .gone on my list of
all-time greats. It’s nothing
, pa'rtioularly spectacular, it’s not
a- movie that cost the studio an
arpi aqd a leg to produce, but is
one of the most charming, moral
and absorbing movies it’s ever
been my pleasure to see and
thqroughly enjoy. By itself, it
would’ve been a very fine ex
ample of motion picture enter
tainment, but the addition of
Hayley Mills as its star, made
“Parent Trap” that much more
enjoyable. So far as I’m con
cerned, the young Miss Mills is
the most outstanding movie star
to come along in a decade—
adult or child. She’s not as
pretty as Shirley Temple was in
her younger years and, honestly
speaking, is not, as yet, a truly
polished young actress. Her
chief assets seem to be charm
and personality and the ability
to get thoroughly wrapped up in
her role or, as in the oase of
“Parent Trap,” her roles, for
Miss Mills portrayed twins. De

movie bargain of the day. Un
fortunately, I missed her earlier
movies, but hope to see them
t during return engagements. She

discovered by Hollywood after
rave notices for her. part in the
movie made in England called
“Tiger Bay.” Her star is on
the ascendency, and it’s a re
freshing and happy realization
for moviegoers to know that in
the years to come the screen’s
cutest, most charming and per
sonable young actress will be
lending her talents to many fu
ture productions. Let’s hope
they’re all as enjoyable as “Par
ent Trap,” which, by the way,
received excellent direction from
one David Swift and is, without
a doubt, the finest live produc
tion yet from the Disney studios.
One more note, by the way,
concerning Hayley Mills. She’s
the youngest daughter of the
fine British actor, John Mills,
who’s been a personal favorite
of mine for many, many years.
Monday looks to be the best
night for summer tee-vee. Spike
Jones on one show and Ray Mc-
Kinley with the Glenn Miller
orchestra, on another. That
wonderful big band sound, ex
emplified by the Miller organi
zation, provides a happy combi
nation of music and memories
for their half hour. They could
concentrate more on the real
Glenn Miller sound than they
did on their initial broadcast.
However, it’s a good show and I
know a lot of people have been
looking for something like it.
Speaking of television, how do
the directors of WAVY-TV get
away with such an abundance of
goofs during one average day?
I started counting ’em one night
and ran out of fingers and toes.

opportunity to do something and
to become somebody.

“Week For Aging”!
The Edenton Employment Se
curity Commission office is co
operation with the Governor’s
Coordinating Committee on Ag
ing to emphasize the special
“Week on Aging,” according to
Manager Buell A. Bailey.
Designated recently by Gov
ernor Terry Sanford as giving
“Special consideration to the
health, happiness, and welfare
of North Carolina’s older popu
lation,” the week of July 16-22
has been set aside by the Gov
ernor’s office to focus attention
to the state’s older population,
65 years of age and older. The
Coordinating Committee, accord
ing to Mr. Bailey, was started
in 1956 and since then has been
successful to making the gen
eral public aware of the physi
cal, economic, social and other
needs of older people.
Mr. Bailey said he hoped civic
groups, churches, and other
agencies in Edenton will recog
nize the older population of this
area during the “Week of Ag
ing,” and volunteered the ser-i
vices and facilities of the Em-'

office to help local groups and
citizens become acquainted with'
the needs of and the facilities
for the aged.

I Continuing in our search for

considered today is: What can
S friendship with Christ mean to
a Christian in his relationship
with God and with others?
' In the story of Martha and;

illumination. Lazarus, beloved
of Jesus, died, and was raised

ministering to the Lord’s needs
in practical things, resented
Mary’s listening to Jesus’ teach

kitchen. And, Jesus, when call

in her behalf, instead rebuked
Martha, albeit very gently, for
being concerned over “many
things,” pointing out, equally
gently, that Mary had chosen
“the good portion”—the fruits of
the spirit. Jesus, thereby, put
his finger on the fundamentals
of the spirit, rather than the
trappings of physical comfort.
And in this story, how many
of us can find a parallel in our
own lives today?
Let us take a look at these
people from Bethany, who were
Jesus’ friends. 'Not one seems
to have been famous, influential,
or rich. They had faults, their
troubles and their handicaps.
Yet they, with others who were
but average individuals, became
architects of a new world order.
Martha and Mary were as dif
ferent as day and night; yet
Jesus saw personality traits in
; both which could be especially
| valuable for work in the King
dom. Different, too, were those
whom Jesus first called: Peter
was tempestuous and volatile,
Andrew quiet and dependable,
unassuming: John was warm
hearted and affectionate, James
diffident and shy; and Martha,
I as we have remarked, was bust-

lie knows that more of Cod’s wonders are right up ahead—and that’s
where lie’s going. Just walking among God!
In the truest sense of the words, our young friend doesn’t have to
FIND God—he is WITH Cod.
We are older. A lot of things clutter up our lives. We arc busy
losing God. When wc do search for Him we scarcely know where to
turn.
It would he nice to join this young fellow—to share his thoughts,
his hopes, his dreams, his God.
We can't do that. We don't have a child’s faith. But we can coma
CLOSER to God and ease our restless hearts.
We can go to our church—Cod’s temple, our place of worship,
God will be there.
