Payment $230,000,000 Special GI Insurance Dividends Begun Payment of the $230,000,000 special G. I. insurance dividend to some 4,800,000 veterans, which was started last week, is expect ed' to be completed by early Au gust, John S. Gleason, Jr., Ad ministrator of Veterans Affairs, has reported. The President, on April 21, 1961, announced that the Vet- j erans Administration would pay! a special dividend. Payment of the dividend was recommended j . by Mr. Gleason upon completion j of an actuarial study ordered by j the President early last Febru ary. The VA Administrator said his agency plans to finish its divi dend processing work on vet erans’ accounts at VA insurance offices in Philadelphia, St.- Paul and Denver by July 31, and, that the last of the checks would * -be mailed from Treasury dis bursing offices during the first few days in August. Special dividend payments will , be made in North Carolina to some 101,760 World War II vet erans holding National Service Life Insurance (NSLI) policies in the amount of $4,091,600, and to approximately 4,472 World War I veterans who have U. S. Government Life Insurance j (USGLI) in the amount of $636,-) 400, J. D. Deßamus, Manager of the North Carolina VA regional office in Winston-Salem, said. Government Life Insurance poli cies. Os the $230,000,000 total dividend, about $193,000,000 will be paid on NSLI policies, and approximately $37,000,000 on j USGLI policies. Mr. Gleason said veterans do not have to apply to the VA I for their dividends. He ex j plained that payments would be j made automatically, and \that in quiries from veterans would only serve to divert personnel from the dividend project, and could result in delayed payments. The dividend, distribution now under way is the second to be paid by the VA during 1961. Payments of the regular 1961 dividend, amounting to $258,500,- 000, were completed last March 17. Although regular dividend payments normally are spread over a full 12-months, this year the payments were paid at an accelerated rate by order of the President as a stimulus to the national economy. Mr. Gleason said that both the regular and the special divi dends are primarily a refund to j the veteran-policyholders of part )of their premium payments. He pointed out that the refunds are made possible principally be cause the death rate among policyholders continues to be much lower than the rates upon which the premiums were es tablished by law.
