YOUR FUTURE
By A/2c FLETCHER G. PERRY
Malmsirom Air Force Base, Montana
In the past I have written my
articles with the intent of being
ot some help to the older mem
bers of the family. However,
this is not the case this time.
This article is primarily intend
ed for the high school seniors
who have recently embarked on
an entirely new wav of life and
for some, face reality for the
very first time. In other words
I’m referring to your son or
daughter who graduated. Al
though this article is intended,
as I have already stated, for the
graduating student, you parents
who have a deep concern for
the future of your son or daugh
ter may likewise be interested
as to its content.
So you have been anxiously
awaiting that day when you got
that diploma which some of you
have toiled so diligently and
waited so long for. But have
you stopped and considered what
you are going to> do after all the
hooping and hollering of the
graduation exercises are over?
Have you tried to prepare your
self over the past years for your
future? Or did you do just
enough work tc get by that one
day and never thought about to
morrow? If this has been your
policy, then I can assure you
right now that your future is
very dim.
There is an old saying that I
have found to be very true,
“You get out of life just what
you put into it.” I don’t have to
kid you because you are no

longer children or maybe I
'should say you should no long
er be children. In order to get
along in this old world you
must be able to face reality and
be able to alter your plans
thusly. When something which
you had planned fails to ma
terialize, don’t give up. If you
give up after the first try, I
can assure you right now that
your future is going ot be very
dismal because life is full of
everyday trials. In the first
place you must realize that life
is not a thing of all joy and no
hardships.
| I realize that everything I
have said so far may have
sounded very discouraging. Well
for those who have failed to
prepare themselves properly this
is the only side of life you can
expect to find until you change
your ways.
| In contrast to what I have
! stated previously, for these of
you who have toiled diligently
'and seen fit to prepare yourself
for the future, you have a lot
to look forward to in life. But
.let me caution you, just be
cause you have prepared your-
I self, don't go through life with
| a chip on your shoulder, ex
pecting everything to fall your
way, and for doors to open at
your command. What I’m trying
ito get across to you is that be
cause of your preparation there
will be far less obstacles but
there will be obstacles.
You would no doubt do well

THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON. NORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. AUGUST 3. 1961.
,| to take heed of Thomas A. Edi- <
|son, “Success is 2% genius and
1 98 per cent honest effort.” In 1
other words, you don’t have to 1
be a great intellect to be sue-1
! cessful in life. Instead, your >,
honest effort is the main es
sential. Don’t misunderstand me.
I don’t mean to imply that just
because you do your best, you
can expect to be the best in any
thing you undertake. You have
to be broad-minded enough to
face reality as to your own cap
abilities. Once you have done
this and apply yourself in a job
which fits your .abilities you
can expect as much out of life
as the next person.
You may ask, “How am I to
know what my true capabilities
are?” If so, you have taken a
very sincere step to face reality.
In answer to that question, let
me ask you a question, “When
was the last time you got down
on your knees and asked God
for guidance?” Here is where
the answer to your question lies.
Remember, God said, “Get thy
tools ready, I will find thee
work.”
In conclusion you may say,
well I now realize my mistake
but it’s too late to help me be- j
cause I graduated. Let me as- j
sure you it is never too late, j
Remember the first step to cor
recting a mistake is to realize
your fault. Remember what I
said before, "success is 2 per
cent genius and 98 per cent
hone3t effort.”
Your life may not be what it
could have been had you recog
nized your mistake early, but
if you do ycur best you can ex
pect a fruitful life within the
bounds of your preparation.

Lesson Text: Acts 9:36-43.
Following our study of person-!
alities of the New Testament,.
and lives that speak for Christ, J
today we come to the story of
Dorcas.
When Dorcas died, she was!
surrounded by many friends, all
’mourning her loss, all weeping;
land exhibiting the tangible evi-j
dence of her good works; coats!
and garments that she had made j
for them. Therefore, when Pe- j
1 ter, in the name of the Holy
Spirit, brought her back to life
among them, there was much re-
I joicing and praise for the Lord.
Dorcas was, indeed, a woman
who knew how to become rich —
truly rich! She discovered the
1 truth of what our Lord meant:
when he said, “It is more blessed I
to give than to receive” (Acts

There is not one among us
who has not, at times, had
dreams of being rich —of having 1
enough money to live in com
fort, with, perhaps, a little left
over for squandering on a few
luxuries —such as human nature.
Duly considering this facet of
our nature, we must realize that
this desire, in itself, is not evil.
It merely calls attention to the
fact that in this day and time
money is important. It is neith
er good sense nor good religion
to belittle the significance of
money. For one thing, in a very
real sense money represents our
| very selves. It is what we re
i ceive in return for the expendi
| ture of ourselves. So, when we
! spend it. we spend ourselves —r
I our heartbeats, our strength, our
. skills, and the few precious days
of our years, And when we give
j it, we give ourselves. Yes.
money is important because it
represents personality in nego
tiable form.
Money also has decisive sig
nificance because it is an instru
ment for good or evil. With
| ten dollars we can buy enough
| liquor to besot our intelligence,
