PAGE TWO >_*ecticn g:^ 2j523 Lose License To Operate Autos ; The Motor Vehicles Depart - ment reports 2,523 traffic con victions in July resulting in the suspension or revocation of legal driving privileges. .Heading the monthly list was drunk driving with 527 first time offenders and 66 two and three time losers. The offense, which normally leads the agency’s sum mary, requires a mandatory rev ocation of license. Speeding was in second place with 417 convictions. Most of the speed law- violations were in the “over 75 mph” class with two offenses of speeding over 55 and speeding within city limits accounting for the rest. Driving without a license came in third with 264 convictions which resulted in additional penalties for the offenders. Various other violations such as two offenses of reckless driv ing, larceny of auto, improper use of driver’s license, racing, unsatisfied judgment and trans porting intoxicants helped swell the July total. Department clerks noted that 90 motorists forfeited their li cense under the state’s point suspension program while court ordered suspensions caught 89 ethers. Failure to deposit security (253) and cancellation of insur ance (347) headed the non-mov ing violations. Revoked or sus pended licenses for the year so far totaled 19,999. The agency’s driver license di vision also reported mailing out; 4,941 warning letters to border line traffic violators. The total was divided into 581 advisories for reckless driving, 1,819 for speeding and 2,541 for points. In each instance the letters call attention to the driver’s rec ord advising him to improve it, as a subsequent violation could mean loss of license. N. C.
