A group met one night last week at Cross Roads Community in hope of organizing a com munity 4-H Club. The Assembly of God Church of Edenton had a fellowship night on Monday night. . CHOwgj News By HARRY VENTERS Assistant County Agent - Last Tuesday night a meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Winborne. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the necessity and possi jbilities of organizing a commun ity 4-H Club in the Cross Roads community. Those present, Mr. and Mrs. Fahey Byrum, Mr. and Mrs. Lindsay Ray Evans and Mr. and Mrs. Winborne, were im pressed with the aims and ob jectives of community 4-H clubs and recognized the need of such an organization for the young people in the community. They agreed to contact the parents of all boys and girls in the com munity and invite them to a meeting at the Chowan Com munity Building on September 12. I hope that we will have good attendance at this meeting. In order to have a really good 4-H program, and for the boys and girls to benefit to the great est extent from 4-H work* j$ is necessary that parents be in formed on the purposes of the different activities. Just as par ents must guide the direction of their children’s lives in other things, this guidance is neces sary for 4-H work, too. We do not wait for a child to make up his .mind whether he will at tend school—we send him and try to encourage- him to work and learn. We must do the same for 4-H. If parents understand the purposes of 4-H projects, camp, 4-H Club Week, 4-H Church Sunday, Achievement Days, etc., they will want their children participating in as many of these activities as possible. Leaders have also been con tacted in the Cannons Ferry sec tion and we hope to get started in that community soon. Mr. Overman and Miss Aman have also been working with leaders i i the Glider Community and here a sponsoring committee has been named. Maybe, with the cooperation of you in these and other commun ities, we can get a club in every s n ction and have a real fine pro- ISbI Old, " r IH tJ 'SBWSr iiOAu Straight $0.30 bourbon sxzsrjzz* BHHWv , :k. Warning Given For Sewage Disposal At Shell - Hull Homes The District Health Depart ment issues warning to owners of new “shell or hull” type homes, which are beginning to appear throughout the Health District, to provide sewage dis posal facilities. These homes are to be found mostly in the rural lareas, there fore it is necessary to provide individual sewage disposal fa cilities consisting of septic tank or approved privy. In most cases when these homes are purchased they con-, sist of only the “shell or hull” and it is the responsibility of the owner to complete the interior of the home, including the sew age disposal system. Health Department officials have found cases where these homes are occupied without provisions made for sewage disposal. Safe sewage disposal is as im portant as a good water supply, heating, lighting,—good construc tion, expensive TV antenna and other items necessary to raise the standards of living, it is pointed out. It not only can create health hazards but oftrffl raises complaints from neigh bors. The Public Health Laws of North Carolina require every residence located within a mile of another residence, place of business or public assembly to be provided with either an ap proved privy, septic tank or connected to sewer system. The Health Department asks the cooperation of these home owners in order to avoid any unpleasant legal action. It is also pointed out the in dividual water supply be 50 feet horizontal distance from any part of septic tank installation or pit privy. It is.recommend ed that persons considering pur chasing a home take into con sideration the lat size in order to provide adequate space for safe i individual sewage disposal and water supply. TRY A HERALD CLASSIFIED THE DOLLAR VALUE OF ESTATE PLANNING By RICHARD A. NORSWORTHY Trust Representative, Peoples Rank & Trust Company Periodically, every successful business man takes stock of his business, ascertains his financial 1 position, and charts a course for the future. It’s the only way to make! dollars—and sense. This proced-! ure is even more important for! his estate which includes not only his business, but his sav ings, his investments, his land, and all of his worldly possess ions. That process, as applied to his estate, is called “estate [ planning” which is a practical, analytical process with a pur- 1 pose. It begins with an analy sis if estate assets and the fami ly situation together with po tential tax liabilities and ends with constructive suggestions to accomplish desired objectives.! Estate planning protects the end- 1 product of a man’s lifetime ef fort to achieve financial se curity for himself and his fam ily. Within the past generation 1 every man, woman, and' child has become intimately acquaint ed with taxes —the income tax, the luxury tax, the cosmetics | tax, the travel tax, the com- j munications tax, the capital j gains tax, the tobacco tax, the! amusements tax, the gasoline! tax. You can’t make a move, without company—the tax man.! To top it off, many of the states j have levied a general sales tax| on everything from potatoes to Cadillacs. You know the tax problems ] you have to contend with to- 1 day, but you may not be as fa-' miliar with those which will ASHAMED OF JESUS By TERRY JONES "Also I say unto you. However, if you hope to sal vage the maximum of your es tate for your family it- would be wise to give estate planning your close attention now. For example: at death, your estate (if over the current fed eral estate tax exemption) will be faced with another kind of tax—the federal estate tax which starts at 370 and rises rapidly to a maximum of 77% of capital assets, and this in cludes the value of all life in-1 surance in which you may have' any of the “incidents of owner ship” whether payable to a named beneficiary or not. It also includes t'.ie value of! any property owned jointly with' husband or wife or with any one else. After a lifetime of in- i come tax on your earnings, your estate is now faced with a sec ond tax on those earnings which you may have saved or invested for the protection of your family, and all other assets which you may have received by gift, inheritance, or other wise. What will be left for your family will depnd largely en how wisely you chart the course, i Estate planning can preserve the maximum estate for your family. Without it, they may lose dollars and protection they might otherwise have. There are ways and means to soften the tax blow but it will require positive action on your part. before the angels of God." —Luke 12:8-9. Are you ashamed of Jesus? Many times when the name of the Lord is mentioned among a group of people, heads will drop and all will become silent. Of ten people who have made a public profession of faith before a church congregation are still guilty of being ashamed of their Lord. We should remember the words of Paul to the Romans as he said, “Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed” (Rom. 10:11). I believe that if a person has truly been born again, as Jesus said we must be, then he won’t be ashamed of Jesus. We should realize that often God brings to our mind the condition of a lost sinner. I dare say every Christian knows someone that is lost. When God reveals this friend’s lost condition to us we should first of all talk to God about that person. Then God will open the way for an opportunity to speak to that person about his or her soul. We shouldn’t hesi tate for we are dealing with this soul’s home for all eternity. If we fail to witness then we fail God. We should remember that when we deal with someone’s soul we are dealing with some thing more serious than any thing that could happen to that person; it is not something to be joked about or passed off light ly.
