Groonsz, r*pr«*»nUliv* of the Social Security Administration, is in Edenton every Thursday at the Noilh Carolina Entployment Security Commission office in the Citizens Bank Building. ■ ’ V. - ■ ' r> Qver 200,000 persons under 50 years of. age—disabled workers and certain of their dependents were awarded Social Security disability benefits the first six mopths (November, 1960 through •fy>ril, 1961) after the 1960 amendments became effective, j Prior to these amendments cashj disability benefits were only] payable to disabled workers age! .50 and over. Benefit payments' during this six months’ period; amounted to over tw.elvc million | dollars. The story of Ronnie S., his] wife and four children would; be entirely different if the age 50 requirement had not been dropped. Ronnie, age 35, /had worked over ten years as a manager of a chain store. One hot night after work, he and his family went to the lake for a picnic supper and a swim. Somehow or other when Ron nie dived into the water he hit a shallow spot ana broke his neck. This accident resulted in complete body paralysis, mak ing him bedridden and unable to do any work. Sad as this I is, .it could have been worse. Ronnie and his family get a $254 Social Security disability benefit check each month. Fur thermore, as long as any \of Ronnie’s children c.re under 18 years of age, they and his wife will also continue to get benefits along with Ronnie. These benefits not only make it possible to keep the family to gether, but Ronnie also has the satisfaction of knowing he con tributed towards them while he worked—when he paid Social Security taxes on his earnings each payday along with the osn tri|t>utions of like amount from hi£ employer. The risk of disability was the last to be covered 1 under the Social Security system. Each legislative year since 1954 when disability coverage was enact ed, amendments have broadened coverage and provided for cash ! benefits to disabled workers and * certain of their dependents. One provision that may not be too ’ widely known js that benefits may be paid to an adult son or - daughter of a disabled, re tired or deceased insured work er if the disability occurred be fore age eighteen. Some 34,000 childhood disability beneficiar ies are in this group. As of April, 1961, over 800,- Plagued Day And f Nightwithßladder ! ' 000 disabled workers and their dependents were receiving bene fits totalling nearly fifty-six million dollars monthly. To be eligible for Social Se curity disability benefits a | ' worker must have worked for ]at least five years in the ten | year period before he became i disabled. His illness or injury ! must be one that shows up in l medical examinations and tests. I i It must be a long term illness | or injury so severe that it pre- ‘ vents the worker Tom doing] ' any substantial gainful work. ]lf an illness or injury is one that is expected to improve with medical treatment, the worker is not eligible for Social ’.Security disability benefits. The 1961 Amendments to the Social Security law extended the time for filing for Social Security disability benefits to June 30, 1962, Workers with long standing disabilities may lose all or some ot their rights to these‘benefits if they do not. apply for them before June 30, 1962. A disabled worker age 62-64 whose disability claim has been disallowed may apply for a re duced retirement benefit. If he does this he will continue to re ceive a reduced retirement benefit at age 65. If you are disabled, be sure to check with your local Social Security office about your rights to Social Security disability benefits. Materials on the pro visions of the law are available and the Social Security repre sentatives will be happv to an swer your questions and help you in any way possible.
