E. Evans, wildlife protector in Cho wan County. Mr. Evans said that carbon etrachloride fire extinguishers and others of the toxic vaporiz ing-liquid type such as chloro bromomethane are no longer ap provable equipment as of Janu ary 1,1962. The U. S. Coast Guard withdrew approval of this equipment effective Decem ber 6, 1958, but allowed use of these extinguishers until January 1 of this year in order that boatmen could replace them with approved foam, carbon dioxide or dry chemical types. lie also reminded boat owners j that only Coast Guard approv-j able lifesaving devices would be considered as legal equipment, j Life-saving equipment that can not be Coast Guard approved will not satisfy legal require ments, and will be dealt with accordingly. “For their own safety,” he says, “boaters must obtain ap- Joe Conger Urges Writing Letters Continued from Page 1. What we can do is limited only by how we can co operate with Virginia. We are ready to cooperate.” “There is nothing Governor Sanford can do to help this im mediate area industrially and economically more than to give us this road,” Conger said. “Vir ginia is moving rapidly to seek away for providing essential approach roads to the Chesa peake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It is apoarent that the Virginia High way Department will build a new road south to the North Carolina line connecting with the bridge-tunnel. If this area is to benefit by the thousands of tourists who will move into our area after the completion of the bridge-tunnel, we must be able to provide them with ade quate highways and our present highways are insufficient to han dle the expected increase. This is still another reason why citi zens of Chowan should write the following highway commission ers and urge construction of this new road: J. Gilliam Wood, First Division Highway Commis sioner, Edenton; Graham Elliott, president of Elliott Chevrolet Co., Washington, N. C.; D. G. Bell, Morehead City, and Lauch Faircloth, Clinton. “If copies of these letters are I sent to Merrill Evans, Chairman of the Highway Commission, they will be even more effec tive.” Coleman Andrews Flays Communism Continued from Page 1, Section 1 Andrews pointed out the rapid spread of communism which, he said, now includes a th'ird of the world’s population under its domination. State and federal laws are ex . plicit about boat numbers and citations will be issued to op erators of improperly number ed boats. S. Internal Revenue Commissioner and that the situation has grown worse with very little done about it. Andrews said Fabian social ism is to overthrow capitalism 1 and that America is waking up I from a 30-year binge of turning away from the Constitution. 1 ‘The present conservative trend; is not against the government: but the usurpers,” he said. He I further charged that Fabian so cialism is to brand anyone whe declares his love of God and country as an extremist. He further criticized the lack of moral fiber of today’s people and emphasized the need for a sense of right and wrong beginning with the individual and extend ing to religion, education, the military and government. The speaker urged that peo ple have the courage to stand up and be counted and take ac tion to stop the communist trend that is swallowing up the coun try. He said those who speak out might be called screw-balls and 'crackpots but referred to Washington, Jefferson, Adams and Patrick Henry who were called radicals because they dared to stand up and be counted.
