Department of has important implications for North Carolina and U. S. tobacco growers. Ac cording to the March 1962 study file r£w' external ditty rat# on unmanufactured U. S. tobacco levied} by the European Common Mark* has been increased by one-tHfrd over the 1958, rate. This ifc a 28 percent ad valorem rate vjrth a maximum effective rite dr 17.2 cents per potted and a minimum of 13.2 cehts per pound.* The report states: “The rate in itself is higher Jhan the 1958 and contains k bias in favor bf lower priced i 1 tobaccos! which was not in th£ specific I duties, of individual (EEC) mem ber countries. The csd specific rates ranged from f zero in France and Italy to/ 19.3*- events per pound in Gerrttany. ~ The average incidence in 1958 on to-! bacco from the U. S. was equiv alent to 19.3 percent ad valor-' em compared with about 25.8 ( Percent Under the new rate., Tobacco from member countries' Will have duty-free access. to' other member countries. Tobac- 1 cos from the associated areas of Greece and Africa will also en ter duty-free into all * Common Market countries •. . . Europe has been a market for U. S. to bacco’for about 350 years. Flue cured tobacco is by far the most /important U. S. export. The United States exports about 100 million pounds of flue-cured an nually' to the ‘Six’ (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium - Luxem bourg, France, Italy).” The crux of the problem can be sum med up with the fact that, un der the new tariff imposed by the European Common Market, U. S. tobacco will face a diuty considerably higher than it did in 1958, and tobacco from EEG member countries and associates (Greece and African areas) will have no duty to pay. The study concludes that “unless the Unit ed States is successful in ne gotiating further reductions (in 1 EEC tariff), it is likely to ex perience a decreasing share of ah increasing (tobacco) market.” Activities Acti vities before the Congressional Committees continue to com mand a large portion of my time and that of the other Sen ators. (™-i - : \ SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Cont'd- from Page 6—Section 2 among some, to poke fun at “do gooders,” but the New Testa ment, while repudiating the doctrine of good works as the door to salvation, nevertheless encourages the saved sinner to do good. t The word “regeneration” de notes the decisive spiritual change effected by God’s Holy Spirit in which a soul, naturally estranged from God, is renewed in disposition, substitutes holy affections and desires for self ish gratification, and enters upon a life- of increasing holi ness, thus growing more like Christ. This is Palm Sunday. Today we are thinking about Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem as the Messiah. But we must also realize that only a few days after the crowds hailed him as “the Son of David” and as the long-promised Messiah, they turned against him,, screaming “Crucify him.” Thus the Mes siah went to the cross. On the afternoon of Good Fri day many of us will go to our churches and take part in ser vices commemorating the Cru cifixion of God’s only Son, who died for us. It should be a time for self-examination. We: 86 PROOF I L Ch ■ gIIVER m |M .a bjenmol • i a ° U HBON WHBS I^ I Wm '■ .; ";'-r tteoukh each atm q»k oamalvre, Am 1 helping to crucify Christ afresh by my indifference, my self-centeredness, and my pre accupation with the effort to make a living and establish a reputation? Our lesson title suggests that “the cross calls us.” It dies in deed. It calls us to renewed loyalty to Christ, who lives to today, not as a wandering Teacher garbed in robe and sandals, but in the spirit, every where present. Look again at Titus 3:2. The ways of dealing with one an other described in this verse constitutes one response to the call of the cross.
