I '-1 -I- Up County Church Baseball Teams Planning For Playoffs At a meeting of coaches of the Center Hill-Great Hope’’ pal -r# lord’s Bridge, Rocky Hoclc, War wick and Hobbsville-Sandy iSross baseball league on Saturday, August 17, the schedule for the annual playoffs was arranged.. The teams and their coaches are as follows: ■>, Center Hill-Great Hope: iSpach is the Rev. Henry V. Napier, pastor. Intermediate ; team,: Robert Bulls, Robie Boyce, A1 Asbell, Charles Davis, Joey As bell, Clifton Beamon, Mac Nix on, Wayne Perry, Gene Perry, Tommy Harrell and Tommy Chappell. Junior team: A1 Byrum, John Dußois, Philip Smithson. Gary Dußoi.s, Tom Bulls, Ray Toppin, Fred White 111, Rodney Jordan, Bill Monds, Edgar Roberson, Ray Hollowell, Ray Winslow, Donald Winslow, Keith Jordan and Bobby Harrell. « Ballard’s Bridge team coach is John Hollowell' and the team roster is as follows: Intermedi ate team, Millard Joyner, Bobby Hollowell, Johnny Winborne, , ID. D. Hare, B. Byrum, Tommy Ward, Thomas Evans, J. Hare, D. Bunch, C. Piland and D. Hare. Junior team: L. Evans, J. Hare, J. Hollowell, Charles As bell, F. White, A. Bunch, T. As bell, G. Jordan and J. C. Byrum. Rocky Hock coaches are Char lie Peele and Sherlon Layton. A roster was not available. Warwick coaches are D. H. Berryman and Darryl Parks and the team is made up of: Ron nie Berryman, Jesse White Keith Rollins., Ivor Bunch, Jim my Ward, Curtis Bunch, Dillard, White, William Earl White, Lar ry White and Roger, Carlton and David Boyce. Hobbsville-Sandy Cross teams are coached by Waverly H9IIO - and Alford Stallings. The schedule of playoffs matches Ballard's Bridge junior and intermediate teams against the Hobbsville - Sandy Cross junior and intermediate teams tonight (Thursday) at Chowan High School beginning with the junior game at 6 o'clock and followed by the intermediate game at 8 o’clock. There will be no admission charge, but those who desire will be given an opportunity to make a con tribution to help pay for the lights, since the teams are not profit making. The junior team of P'v’t-i* Hock will meet the junior team of Center Hill-Great Hope at the Center Hill ball park Sat urday morning. August 25. at 10 o’clock. The Warwick interme diate team' will meet the inter , mediate team of Center Hill- Great Hope on Saturday, Aug ust 25 at the Center Hill park at 1:30 in the afternoon. The winner of the Ballard’s Bridge - Hobbsville inteimeuuue game of Thursday, August 23, will meet the Rocky Hock inter mediate at Chowan High 1 School Saturday, August 25, at 1 o’clock. The winner of this game plays the w'inner of the Warwick - Center Hill game in finals on Saturday, September 1 at 2 o’clock at Chowan High School. The public is urged to help support the teams by being pres ent for all the playoffs and When the opportunity arises to make a contribution to help the boys and their teams in a fi nancial way. The teams are sponsored by the churches un der whose names they play. Rogjty Hock has as its pastor the Rev. Thurman Allred; Center Hill-Great Hope, the Rev. Henry V. Napier; Hobbsville - Sandy Cross, the Rev. Leonard Ger rayd; Warwick, the Rev. Warren Rollins and Ballard’s Bridge, the Rev. Carl Hart. The pas tors and the churches urge par ticipation by the public in this phase of their recreation pro gram. With playoff coming up, plans are being made for another year and some minor changes in rules and age groupings will be made for another year. The softball league made of the same churches has finished with Center Hill taking the cham pionship handily by winning all but one league game and los ing two games to a team from Portsmouth,, Va. Cecil Byrum of Tyner is coach of the Center Hill team. It 5s hoped that the churches involved can make up a mixed age touch or tag football league for some games between each other this fall and winter. Nearly half of the driv ers involved in fatal highway crack ups in North Carolina last year had 11 or more years of driving experience.
