Any students who have not
been listed or any new students
who have not registered for the
school year are requested to re
port to thfe principal’s office on
September 4 for assignment to
home rooms.
The .new year will begin with
a half day on Tuesday, and the
first full day will be an Wed
nesday, September 5.

playoff championship of the Roa

Coierain snatched the deciding
series from the Chowan County
outfit by beating them 11-10 on
Wednesday night and 6-5 Fri
day. It was only the fourth and
I fifth losses by Rocky Hock all
season.

Bicycle Rider
Hurt By Auto

An eight year-old Negro youth
narrowly escaped serious injury
Wednesday afternoon of last
week when the bicycle on which
he was riding was struck and
demolished by an automobile.
Lewis Valentine suffered only
minor bruises when he was
knocked from his bicycle by a
car driven by Olivia Johnson
Hines, Negro, of Route 3, Eden
ton.
The Hines car had stopped at
the intersection of Carteret and
North Oakum Streets before it
pulled out to head north on Oak
um. Valentine rode his bicycle
into the path of the slow-moving
vehicle as it entered the inter
section . Edenton police investi
gated and listed Valentine’s bi
cycle as a total loss.
Mrs. Clara Boswell
Honored At College
Mrs. Clara M. Boswell, sci
ence teacher at John A. Holmes
High School, was cited tor work
of excellence while atending a
National Science Foundation In
stitute at East Carolina College
this summer.
Mrs. Boswell won top honors
for studies in earth science. She
was among eight teachers who
were presented special citations
upon completing the seminar
last Thursday.

R. C. Holland Dies
After Long Illness
Ravenel Carlisle Holland, 70,
died Wednesday night of last j
week at 7:45 o’clock at his home j
on West Church Street after be- j
ing in ill health for four years.
A native of Nansemond County
in Virginia, he was an Edenton
attorney for many years.
Surviving is his wife, Mrs.
Myra- Vann Holland.
He was a member of the
Edenton Baptist Church and a
veteran of World War I.
Graveside services were held
in Beaver Hill Cemetery Fri

The cost of the proposed im

Central had more or less been
on the hook for some time, and
the school made the game offi
cial this week. The contest will
be played on Central’s field just
south of Elizabeth City.

been awarded the S3OO Chowan j
Association WMU scholarship j
The scholarship is given to a
student studying to become a
minister, missionary or Christian
education major.
Mr. Jones, 21 years old, is a
graduate of John A. Holmes
High School. He completed two
years of work at Chowan Col
lege, where he was president of
the Ministerial Alliance of Cho
wan. He now plans to enter
his third year at Campbell Col
lege.
Mr. Jones, a member of Mace
donia Baptist Church, is at pres
ent pastor of the Chappell Hill
and Yeopim churches, having
been ordained to the Baptist
ministry April 6,1962. He has
preached for several youth re
vivals.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Haywood Jones and is married
to the former Miss Carolyn God
win of Cofield; N. C.

The Governor will be in the
Albemarle area to dedicate the
Knotts Island ferry and tour
schools in five counties, of which
