SOL CONSERVATION NEWS By G. SAMUEL OCX, Work Unit Conservationist Conservation Fanning E. M. Ward has just revised his conservation farm plan. 'Mr. Ward considered the capability of the land when deciding which crops’ he would plan in each field. He worked out a crop ping system to meet his needs and at the same‘time meet the needs of the land. ' The cropping system includes interplanting soybeans in corn for hogs and at the same time add badly needed organic mat ter to the soil. A four year peanut rotation was planned for most of his peanuts. Mr. Ward plans to sow small grain and vetch on most of his light sandy land for winter cover. This will add needed organic matter to the soil and help to control the spring wind erosion. Mr. Ward has been a coopera tor with the Albemarle Soil and Water Conservation District for , sometime and he knows that conservation pays. Pasture or No Pasture Whether the pasture you seed now turns out to be a good pas ture or not depends a lot on the planning and preparation you put into it. To begin with you should select the land that is .most suitable for pasture. Lime and fertilize according to a soil test. Disc the lime and fertilizer in well when preparing a good seedbed. Seed 2 to 3 lbs. of inoculated ladino clover and 10 to 12 lbs. of tall fescue. Sow with a cyclone seeder and cover with a cultipacker or smoothing harrow with the teeth slanted back. It is time to seed your pastures now. Do not graze until about 6 inches high and never graze closer than three inches. Top dress your pasture each year with around 800 lbs. of 0-10-20 or 0-9-27. Sow at least one acre of clover and fescue for each cow and' one acre of pure clover for each three brood sows. : [ Lunch Room Menu | Menus for the Chowan High School lunch room for the week of September 17 will be as fol lows: Monday: Half pint milk, ham burger, mashed potatoes, string beans, tomato wedges, rolls and butter, apple cobbler.
