A Watered-Down Religion By TEHRY JONES Chowan County is blessed ( We many churches of almost evpry major denomination in our 4jfc(Vtion of the country. I dare sM r , most of the people that read this column will be -a church member. By belonging to a ‘church you could call yourself,' to a certain extent, religious. You have shown that somewhere in your heart there is a place for religion. This doesn’t mean that you are a saved person or that you are right with God, but it reveals that you must have some religion in your life. This brings the question, “What kind of religion is yours?” Is it so strong in your life that others have noticed a change in you, a change that has drawn you closer to God? If it hasn’t then your religion has failed you and is false. C. Os C. President Names Chairmen Continued from Page 1, Section 1 ministrator of Chowan Hospital; Industrial Development Com mittee, Bruce F. Jones, Albe- Jmarle Motor Company; Merch ants Committee, Alton Elmore, manager of Belk-Tyler’s and Tourist Committee, W. J. P. Earnhardt, Taylor Theater. President rsyrum stated that each chairman will appoint from 4 to 16 committee mem bers, as has been the custom in previous years. “The record of the progress in our program for action yf the Edenton Chamber of Commerce in tlje new year will be largely the record of accomplishments of our Chamber's committees,” Byrum stated. “Their accom plishments will depend to a great extent upon the care with which the committeemen are se lected and of thei? individual energies and initiative.” Byrum indicated that he would announce chairmen for the Chamber's remaining commit tees in the near future. These committees would be Agricul ture Committee, Recreation Com mittee, Advertising .and Promo tion Committee, Aviation Com mittee, Civic Affairs Commit tee, Budget Committee and State and National Affairs Com mittee. “Insofar as possible,” Byrum said, “I should like the mem bers of our board of directors to Serve as committee chairmen so that reports of committee pro jects can be discussed at our regular monthly board of direc- I tors’ meetings. All Chamber I committees will have both a j short term and long range plans j for promoting the economic J growth of Edenton and Chowan , County and making both an even better place to live and make a living.” A work of art is a corner of creation seen through a tern-1 perament. —Emile Zola. T * ,' 4 M&K' V.j ~ •- We Christians believe that Jesus Christ will save us from our sin if we trust Him, live for Him and confess Him before the world. If a person does this then he is bound to really be “changed” not just turn over a 'new leaf. But if Jesus doesn’t change a person then He just isn’t there. If a church isn’t a group of “changed” people then it isn’t a church of Christ. It may be a gathering of people that have a “watered-down’’ religion. Even religious leaders often take this, “come on now boys, be good” type of religion. ■ Some preach ers try to out-preach each oth er instead of preaching God’s message. Some so-called Chris tians try to be a better “do gooder” than the other. If someone else gets that church of fice then they are aggravated. This watered-down, or half-way religion is the same as no re ligion at all, because that is just what it is “no religion at all.” What does God say about this type of religion? “Thou art lukewarm *- . . I will spue thee out of my mouth.” Rev. 3:16. Has Jesus Christ changed you, or have you changed Jesus Christ?
