It was also reported that the curb and gutter project along the Court House Green is nearing completion. A report was also presented regarding the new tennis courts next to the armory. It was pointed out that when the courts are put in use efforts will be made to prevent bicycles, roller skates and hard-soled shoes on the courts due to the damage which might result. It was also reported that im provements to the Broad Street waterfront had been completed. Top soil has been spread over the new area and grass seed planted. A chain has been placed around the area to pre vent damage to the grass by walking or driving over the area. Jesse Harrell appeared at the meeting to explain the govern ment’s offer to match funds in the $50,000,000 accelerated pub lic works program. During the meeting an amend ment to the present picketing ordinance was adopted. The amendment follows: Ordinance To Protect The Public Interest And Safety: Whereas, picketing disturb ances on the public streets of Edenton have resulted in injury to the person of the Edenton Chief of Police and danger of bodily harm and monetary loss to the general public exists, but at the same time recognizing the rights of any person or group of persons to peacefully picket for lawful purposes, it shall now, therefore, be unlawful for any person or group of persons whatsoever to picket any resi dence or place of business with in the municipal limits of the incorporated Town of Edenton, unless 24 hours notice of the proposed intent to picket has been given the Town Council of Edenton in writing through the Town Clerk’s office. A permit to organize a picket line must be obtained from the Town Clerk. Said permit is to be obtained 24 hours in advance of the beginning date of the proposed picketing. Fee for such permit is hereby set at the rate of SIO.OO per day for each day the picketing exists from the be ginning date to the termination date inclusive, payable in ad vance to the Collector of the Town of Edenton. Violation of this ordinance will be punishable by imprison ment not to exceed 30 days or fine not more than $200.00, in the discretion of the Court. Chowan Is Host For Land Judging Contest Chowan County will be host to the annual Federation Land Judging contest this year. Vo cational agriculture students from Chowan, Gates, Camden. Pasquotank, Perquimans and Currituck counties will partici pate in the contest today (Thurs day), beginning at 1:00 P. M The event is sponsored each fal by the Albemarle Soil Conserva tion District. H. Fahey Byrum, Chowan County district super visor, is chairman of the land judging cohtest committee. The judging will take place on L. N Hollowell’s farm just south of Chowan High School. The district supervisors spon sor the contest annually for the younger generation trying to emphasize the importance of rec ognizing the differences in land and each different kind of land needs.
