The truth of the mat ter is, we Americans are totally blind to the implications of nuclear warfare. We treat it as a joke—but to .me it is no jok ing matter. I am heartily in accord with the stand this coun try has taken in the Cuban crisis—l have written repeatedly of the dangers inherent in a delaying action policy. I main tain that to preserve our free doms, our liberties, and even for survival, of ourselves and our neighbors in the Western Hemis phere, we could not have taken any other course. But let’s take the matter seriously, for it is indeed a very grave step, and not act like comedians. Khrushchev’s actions in the Cuban crisis will give us some inkling as to the kind of man he really is, whether or not he means it when he says he gen uinely wants peace. We’ll learn something about what he intends to do about Berlin—and we’ll know for sure whether we have a strong man in Khrushchev or a madman like Hitler.
