PAGE SIX ‘r—9ECTIOH TWO ■ (AROUND THE FARMS IUN CHOWAN COUNTY By C. W. OVERMAN, Chowan County Agent |ni ■ ' Your Extension Program: If ybu were going to take a trip beyond the confines of Chowan County and the roads you are fa miliar .with, you would likely ob tain a highway map to begin with. On this map you would; locate where you are; then, you would locate where you plan to go or your destination. After these two points had been locat ed on your map you would study the highways and determine which route you want to take, then follow the highway signs. Have you ever stopped to think how much living, our way of life, and the way we progress is like taking a trip? I think we might consider your county agri- j cultural and home economics Ex tension program a trip to better living in our homes, our com munities, our county, etc. If you were taking a trip you would do a lot of planning and, likewise, a lot of serious consid eration needs to be given in the planning and execution of your Extension program. The Exten sion program in Chowan County belongs to the people of Chowan County and the Extension Agents are tools in the form of infor mation, consultation and leader ship guidance. Why not ! look back and evaluate pro j gram a; activities, practices em ] ployed in production and market . ing, family cooperation, com munity cooperation, your Sunday School and church, other organi zations very useful in your com munity and any other elements that have affected your way of life this year. Consider these carefully and ask yourselves this question, “If every other mem ber in my community was like me, how would my community be? If every farmer and home maker in my community and my ! county paid attention to and as sisted with the County Extension program like me, what kind of Extension program would it be?” These are rather silly question?, aren’t they? But, if we will think about the serious aspect of them, the silliness is removed. As you look back and survey or evaluate 1962 you can also make plans for 1963. Your County Extension workers are now in the process of planning with you your Extension pro gram for 1963. What can we help you do to improve your family income? What can we do j to help you improve the home I and surroundings’ What can we] do to help you improve the | THE CHOWAIf HERALP. ETEHTOw. WORTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. NOVEMBER 8. 1962. youth activities for better youth ' development? What can we do to help you make your communi ty more attractive and a better place in which to live? What can we do to stimulate greater in terest in Sunday School, church, PTA and other organizations so important to your family and community? I hope that every person who reads this column will give ser ious consideration to the ques tions listed above. After care ful consideration, contact your County Extension workers, in dividually or in groups, and let them know what you would like to do and how they can help you. Not only are your Exten sion workers anxious to help [ you, but also the vocational and j home economics 'teachers in your schools, your Soil Conservation Service personnel, your ASCS personnel, your FHA personnel and any other agencies working in your county. Let’s plan a bet ter trip for 1963 than we have had in 1962, use the road signs of improved ways along the way and I believe we will come near to reaching the destination we set out for. County 4-H Achievement Pro gram November 15: The Chowan County 4-H Achievement Day program will be held Thursday night, November 15, at the Ry land Community Building at 7 o’clock. At this event we will observe some of the important achievements of 4-H Club mem bers during 1962. Achievement Awards will be presented, and though I do not have a program oi hand, there will no doubt be entertainment. It matters little whether there are children in a family or not. We have a responsibility to the youth who will follow us in a few short years. The better this youth is developed, the more they will be enabled to do as good, and we hope an even bet ter, iob than we have done. May I urge you to “get out of your shell” on the night of No vember 15 and attend this very important 4-H event, showing our youth that we are interested in them, that we believe in them, and that we are backing them up. As a result you will be happier yourself and you will certainly strengthen the youth. I —- | County News 1 [ By MRS.
