SOU CONSERVATION NEWS By G. SAMUEL COX, Work Unit Conservationist Farm Plan Revising Fahey and Carroll Byrum have « beyi cooperators with the Albe marle Soil and Water Conserva tion District for several years. In fact a conservation plan was developed for their farms years ago. Fanning is like everything else today, it is in a changing world, and our fanning needs are changing from day to day. Therefore we have to change or bring our plans up-to-date to meet our present farming needs. Fahey and Carroll have just revised their plan to bring it up to date. The basic item in their plan is a four year rotation on most of their farm. The four year rotation will begin with com followed by peanuts, small grain and cotton. On some of the heavier land the plan they developed calls for fescue every fourth year. The roots of fes cue will penetrate deep into this * tight soil, and help to loosen it up. This will result in higher crop yields in the remaining three years. When seeding the small grain in the fall the fescue be mixed right in with it and this will give you a crop of grain off of this land at the same time you have the fescue Many Turn Out At Halloween Party Continued from Page 1, Section 1 Mike and Henry McMullan, cop ped first prize for floats. The fescue is also used by them for cattle grazing. Deadline on ACP Practices The 1962 Agricultural Conser vation Program will end on De cember 31, 1962. All of the practices that assistance has been requested on will have to be finished by this date. Pasture seeding and cover crops will have to be in and reported to the ASCS office by November 20th. To meet this deadline same practices such as open ditches and tile should be done as soon as possible, because there is not enough contractors to do this work in 3 or 4 weeks time. Open ditches will need to be cleared of trees and brush so that SCS Technicians can stake and sur vey them before they are cut. On tile drains, crops will need to be harvested and outlet ditch es provided before it can be staked and surveyed. If you are planning to do either of these practices you will need to get this work done and let SCS Technicians know when your job is ready to stake and survey. They in turn will schedule the first day possible to do the sur vey work for you. Ition, Albemarle Peanut Co., Jim jbo’s Jumbos, Inc., Barrow Bot | lling Works, Dr. W. I. Hart, Dr. W. S.
