PAGE TWO >—SECTION OKB = OUR SOIL * OUR STRENGTH = Our Soil Our Strength The fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the Edenton Element ary and Chowan School are par ticipating in the conservation poster contest sponsored by the Albemarle Soil Conservation Dis trict again this year. Joe Webb, Jr., Chairman of the district’s poster co: t committee in the chanty s: ‘.hat each class will study con. .rvation during the month of February and then each child will prepare a poster on some conservation idea. The posters will be entered in the county contest and the winners will be presented prizes. In ad dition, the winning posters from each county in the five county district in the overall contest to be held in Elizabeth City in March, 1963. The overall contest is sponsored by the Elizabeth City Chamber of Commerce. In the past the students from Cho wan have taken most of the honors in the contest. J. D. Ward up in the Sign Pine Community doesn’t want to be caught short this spring in getting his tile installed like a lot of people did last spring. He has already gotten his tile staked and contacted a contrac tor about installing it for him. Elementary School I Lunch Room Menu Menus at the Edenton Ele mentary School lunch room ft>r thj? week of February 18-22 are as follows: Monday: Meat loaf, cornbread, gravy, blackeye peas, steamed rice, milk, butter, lemon custard. Tuesday: Meat salad, school baked rolls, potato chips, garden peas, milk, butter, pineapple. Wednesday: Beef vegetable soup, crackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chocolate block cake, milk. Thursday: Roast turkey, turnip grtfens. * creamed potatoes, fruit cup, gibtet gravy, school baked roll's, butter, milk. Friday: Salmon croquettes, cherry pie, cole slaw, cornbread, buttered corn, milk, butter. DUPLICATE BRIDGE WINNERS Winners in the duplicate bridge games played Tuesday night were as follows: North-South 1 — Mrs. Kathryn Goodwin and Earl Goodwin. 2 Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bond of Windsor. East-West 1 — Mrs. Earl Goodwin and Mrs. R. F. Elliott. 2 Mrs. J. H. McMullan and Mrs. Oscar Duncan. Others that plan to install tile or construct ditches should contact us so we can schedule our work to get everybody’s staked as soon as possible in order that they may be completed before time to plant crops. Elmer Graham, assistant to the State Conservationist in charge of watershed work of the Soil Conservation Service, spent Mon day afternoon in the county as sisting us in setting up a tenta tive plan of action for the Bear Swamp Watershed. This plan of action consists of things the lo cal people in Bear Swamp need to do to qualify for assistance in cost-sharing under the watershed program to make the necessary improvements in watershed pro tection (drainage plans other features). This would be anoth er project similar to the already completed Burnt Mill Creek and Pollock Swamp Watershed, scheduled to begin construction this spring. The people in Bear Swamp have shown a consider able amount of interest in or ganizing their watershed into a project to qualify for assistance. MERRY HILL MAN’S MOTHER PASSES IN LENOIR COUNTY Mrs. Ethel Mae Barfield, 66, of the Wheat Swamp section of Lenoir County, died Saturday, February 9. She was a member ' of the Wheat Swamp Christian Church. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3 o’clock Sunday after noon from the chapel of Garner’s Funeral Home by the Rev. Wil bur A- Bellenger of Greenville , and burial followed in Pine Lawn Memorial Park at Kin -1 ston.
