Break land deep with bottom plow, turning under litter as deeply as possible. Plan to fumigate soil in April or at planting time if Nematodes are a problem. Secure good cot ton seed of varieties REX, De- Kalb 108, Coker 100 W or some new variety that has proven good in your area. Chowan County Junior Live stock Show And Sale: The 1963 Junior Livestock Show and Sale is scheduled to be held at the Privott and Asbell warehouse at Chowan-Cross Roads on Wednes day, March 27. 4-H and FHA participants must do everything possible to have their animals in top-notch shape for this event. If this annual event is import ant as we believe it is in the development of our youth and the livestock industry in Chowan County, then it is important enough for our farm people and also our city people to attend the event and support it. We realize that a single county show and sale cannot be as large as one on an area basis, but 'tt has something special to offer Chowan County. This is Ch*o wan County’s Junior Livestock Show and Sale and support is necessary to keep it going if it is worth it. National Poison Prevention Week: The week of March 17-23 has been declared National Poi son prevention Week by Presi dent Kennedy. This will be the second annual observance of the week. One big thing it can do is to make us conscious of the importance of respecting poisons, particularly insecticides and fun gicides that we use on our farms. Hints Making Gardening Easier: The home safety program guide of the National safety Council offers the following to make gar dening safer and easier: “As spring approaches, the gar dening urge is apt to strike. Dig ging in the soil and planting seeds has an outdoor spring-time appeal. “One of the first things to re member is to take it easy, es pecially at the beginning. The day you start spring garden ac tivities, your skin will undoubt edly be tender. Blisters may de- velop very easily; they should be given prompt attention. If you overdo, sore and aching muscles, sunburned back, or even more serious penalties may be your re ward. “For a starter, select some of the lighter jobs. Short sessions of raking, stooping, lifting, and carrying are good ways to con dition yourself for strenuous gardening activities that may lie ahead. Avoid scooping up piles of rubbish with the hands; use a shovel. ‘Tools should also be condition ed before major gardening starts. The cutting edge of a spade, the hoe, or cultivator should be sharpened with a file. Inspect the handles of garden tools and make sure they are free of splinters that ,may cause wounds and invite infection. “Although hoes and rakes are simple tools, they should be handled carefully especially where more than one person is working in a small area. Carry the tools in your hand rather than over the shoulder; if they are put on place the blades of When the day’s work is completed, tools should be cleaned and returned to their proper place.’’ Countries are well cultivated, not as they are fertile, but as they are free. —Montesquieu.
