My vacation week is what this
is. First good'fciztd one in
about three years. A trip up to
Detroit . through Canada v. .
to Niagara Fails . . . then back
home.
Listen to WQDJ concerning a
little boy in our area who is a
victim of cystic fibrosis. He’s
three years old, and his loving
family has to put out at least
$25 every week for medicine.
Prayers and strength are keep
ing the young fellow going.
Cystic fibrosis is second only
to cancer in the lives it takes,
with most of its young victims
succumbing before the age of
15. If you’d like to help this
family, living in the Smalls
Cross Roads section . . . call
Harry Venters, your assistant
county agent for Chowan Coun
ty, and he’ll be glad to bring
you some barbecue tickets. The
proceeds go to the family, and
even if you can’t attend the
barbecue, your donation will be
cheerfully accepted. Congratu
lations go to many fine folks in
that area, particularly the Ruri
tan Club, for doing what they
can to help this youngster.
Republican Representative Mel
vin Laird of Wisconsin told of
a firm in an all-white Wisconsin
community that was forced to
explain at great length why no
Negroes were on its payroll, be
fore it was awarded a govern
ment contract. This is another
ridiculous instance of discrimi
nation in reverse. Ridiculous
because the government agency
questoned this firm which is lo
cated in an all-white communi
ty. Stupid, too. Stupid because
it was a flagrant violation of
the intent of the fair employ
ment clause in government con
tracts.
Vacation time for our family,
and for yours, too, most likely.
But when you’re whizzing along
on one of the nation’s express
ways toward your favorite va
cation retreat, remember that it
wasn't always such a simple
matter to get to your destina
tion so fast. Sixty years ago
it took Col. Nelson H. Jackson
63 days, in his two-cylinder,
chain-drive Winton, to drive
from San Francisco to New
York. That was back in 1903.
One of the problems the colonel
had to contend with was the
supply of fuel. Also . . . roads
were just bumpy trails, which
became worse after a heavy rain.
Bridges were almost unheard of.
and the colonel usually had to
rattle over dry stream beds and
splash across rivers. Os course
there were no road maps or
signs. All of which proves that
in one thing, transportation in
our country, we’ve accomplished
much in a very short span of
time.
Dr. Sidney Isenberg of Atlanta,
a psychiatrist, had this com
ment concerning radio editorials:
“The impact of the spoken word
may be much stronger than the
printed one. This is because it’s
easier to listen than to read.’’ j
A gal named Lillian Reis op
erates and entertains in a night
club in Philadelphia; Recently
she was picked up on a burglary
charge. The burglary, which
netted nearly half-a-million dol
lars, took place in Pottsville,
Pennsylvania. Miss Reis was
charged with master-minding
the burglary. Knowing Potts
ville, Pa., as I do, the money
was probably illegally obtained
in ttye first place.
Young actor Bradon deWilde
used to get furious because his
dad only gave him a small
weekly allowance, from his vast
earnings as a successful child
actor. Now that he’s of age.

Amongst other northern cities
being hit by the integration
movement is Detroit. One of
the first targets there is the
A&P chain. They’re threatened
with a boycott which could
close about 15 stores, if effec- j
tive. Another target for inte- [
grationists in the motor city is >
General Motors. Also ticketed !

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
The meaning of “Soul” will
be brought out in the Lesson-
Sermon at all Christian Science
churches this Sunday.
Golden Text: “Thy way, O
God, is in the sanctuary: who is
so great a God as our God?”
(Psalm 77:13).
Related readings from “Sci
ence and. Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy will open with this passage
(p. 330): “God is infinite, the
only Life, substance, Spirit, or
Soul, the only intelligence of the
universe, including man.”
