CIVIL DEFENSE JOB IN ALASKA LAUDED J When the most violent earth •hocks of this century shook Alaska last Good Friday and tested the mettle of its citizens, Alaskans found in civil defense a new all7 in their endless bat tle, with the elements. Measures taken under • not nearly completed program to help Aleskans survive a nuclear attack were found to be invalu able in surviving a natural ca lamity. The-skeleton State Civil Defence staff of eight became the nucleus of an expanded op erations center coordinating the efforts of the armed forces, pri vate organizations such as the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the YMCA, and the dWtk of local governmental units. Vacation Church School will be held at the Methodist Church Monday, June 8, through Friday. June 12 with classes held each morning from 9 to 11:30 o'clock. The Chamber of Commerce sixth annual spring fishing con test will be in progress through Saturday, May 30. Edenion Chapter No. 302, Or der of the Eastern Star, will meet Monday night, June 1, at 8 o'clock. William H. Coffield, Jr., Post No. 9280, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will meet Tuesday night at 8 o'clock. Commencement exercises at John A. Holmes High School will begin with class night Friday night. May 29, at 8 o'clock. The commencement sermon will be preached Sunday night. May 31 at 8 o'clock And graduation exer cises will be held Monday night, June 1, at 8 o'clock. Ed Bond Post No. 40 of the American Legion will meet on Tuesday night, June 2, at 8 o'clock. ’ Edenion Rotary Club will meet this (Thursday) afternoon at 1 o'clock in the Parish House. Immanuel Baptist Church will hold homecoming festivities at the church Sunday, May 31. A stated communication of Unanimity Lodge No. 7, A. F. & A. M., will be held tonight (Thursday) at 8 o'clock. Center Hill Community will hold a fried chicken supper at the Center Hill Community Building Saturday, June 13. from 4:30 to 8:30 o'clock. Commencement exercises will be held at D. F. Walker High School Friday night. May 29, at 8 o'clock. A vacation Bible School will be held at Chappell's Hill Baptist Church Monday, June 1 through Friday, June S. In Alaska, a powerhouse of the Nation’s defense, many of tho resources readily available to help out wero military. Lt. General Raymond J. Reeves, Commander -in - Chief. Alaska, stated that he quickly discovered after the earthquake that it was necessary to funnel all requests for assistance through Civil De fense to assure coordination, lack of duplication of effort, and the most efficient operation. Looking back to the first fran tic days after the quake, Alas ka’s Governor William A. Egan noted: “When we were dropped to our knees by the earthquake and tidal waves in Alaska, the Civil Defense organization was there to pick us up and get us started on the road to recovery. “I can’t give enough praise to the Civil Defense organization. Anyone in Alaska who had, res ervations about Civil Defense in Alaska, I am sure, has changed his mind now after seeing, the great job this agency did and is continuing to do for our people.” meet Monday night at 8 o'clock. Pictures will be taken through out the afternoon of the first j members of the assembly, the I first meeting place of the church, ,the newly cleared ground that was given to the assembly by a prominent Edentonian, as well as pictures of the whole congre gation. Visitors will be shown the new church property just off Route 32 towards Suffolk, one mile from Edenton’s town limit. The land has been recently cleared by James Strickland, who donat ed his services to the church. The use of the bulldozer he used was by permission of the Higger son and Buchanon Construction Company, which has just com pleted the Edenton watershed project. A special of the day will be the cutting of a huge cake to honor the church •in its second year. The people of Edenton are cor dially invited to be guests of the Immanuel congregation for the day’s events.
