I would like to express my sincere thanks to my friends and relatives for every deed of kind ness rendered to me during my illness. Every card, gift, flower, visit, and prayer was deeply ap preciated. I would like to thank the hospital staff, also, for the wonderful attention given, which aided my recovery. Thanks again, p Mrs, D. H. Berryman ~ This Is The Life By DONALD R. THOMAS t /» Why I Can't Come To Church Here are some reasons why people say they can’t come to church: It’s raining (but they go to work in the rain); it’s too hot (so is the golf course); it’s -too, cold (the church is heated); I don’t have any money to give (there’s no admission charge); no one invites me (you’re not invit ed to the ball games); there are too many hyprocrites (you asso ciate with them daily); our chil dren worry me (you take them other places); we’re having com pany (your witness might do them some good); I don’t like the preacher (he’s human, too); I don’t have anything to wear (you’re not going to a fashion show); the church is always ask ing for money (so is your gro cer); there’s no hurry (how can you be sure); I’d rather go fish ing (you can become fishers of men); seats are too hard (take a pillow); it’s not friendly (neither is the world); some hurt my feelings (Christ was nailed to the cross). For every reason you give, there’s a better one for going. Christ died for you, be loved. Jesus is inviting, come, follow me. Some do, many don’t. I hope you are one who will come and be saved. Lesson Text: Deuteronomy 10:18-19; Matthew 25:31-46; James 2:14-17; I John 3:11-18. Today we seek to re-evaluate our individual and collective re sponses to human need, wher ever it is found, in the light of the Christian principles set by the Bible verses we are .study ing in this lesson. While some Christians feel that the most important thing, as far as religions is concerned, is what a pqrson believes, oth ers feel, equally strongly, that it does not matter too much what path one’s beliefs take— thdt practical service (in the foirn of good works) is the cor nerstone of a Christian life. Actually, both faith and works are essential to full Christian living. While a Christian does not earn his salvation by good deeds towards his fellow-men, he will most certainly be evidencing his genuine commitment to Christ in a meaningful way. Concern for others was the key note of Jesus’ ministry. Hence we read of his preoccupation with the blind, the lame, the sick, the hungry, the social out cast and the little children. Jesus spoke of those who were in need as “my brethren.” The Son of God, the Ruler of the Kingdom, claimed kinship with the lowliest. And the only way that we can serve God is by rend ering what service we can, when we can, unto our fellowmen. It is by our actions that we will be judged—.not from our emp ty professions of faith. In Matthew’s parable we see that diseipleship involves intel ligent understanding, full trust and an unquestioning loyalty to Jesus. We see that while Jesus was going about his ministry on earth, he was quiet, unassum ing and meek, even to the point where he was suffering a shame ful and public death on the cross. Now, in the. parable of the Last Judgment, we see him sitting in splendor on his throne judging each man on his indivi dual merits. And the basis up on which his judgment is based is clearly spelled out for us— in six clearly and sharply de fined specifics: feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the naked, wel coming strangers, visiting the sick and visiting the imprisoned. We see. also, that Je:.sus re quires these good works to be done, not in a self-seeking man ner, but genuinely, unobtrusive ly, without thought for self— almost unconsciously —for a warm heart is ever a spontan eous thing. Integrity of purpose is the key to a Christian way of life. It selves no good pupose for us to look around and see a neigh bor in want, to attend to those wants and later say: “He owes this—or that —to me. He owes me a favor.” The main moti vation behind a helping hand should be the resolving of an immediate crisis in another’s life, without thought of return. No doubt it appeared on every blood-stained shore where gallant men of Christian faith have fallen wounded or dying! For the Cross on which Christ died has ever stood as the symbol of His Life and Truth, And often It has spoken eloquently what human lips could not frame. Is it not too little simply to honor those who have fought and died for our freedom ? Each generation must inscribe its own prayer on the beachhead of history. Religious freedom is the heart of our heritage. In a world in which Liberty must be armed to endure, faith must he practiced to he preserved.
