The purpose of the work that Will be done in North Carolina | will be to develop ways and ( H*eans of utilizing in private in- 1 dustry the technology that is developed in the space program. A great storehouse of knowl-J edge is being built up in many areas of scientific endeavor in our space program. One of the, big challenges we have facing! . us is putting this knowledge to work in private industry. - Under the contract, this type of work will be performed at) the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University *t Durham, State College at Ra leigh, and at the Research Tri angle Institute. Other than in North Car- 1 lina this type of work is being done in only two states. North j Carolina is an ideal place to conduct such work. We have ; both large industries and many 1 small industries in our state and they represent a broad cross section of our Nation’s business 'and industrial community. 1 I am sure that once the Na tional Aeronautics and Space | Administration and the many contractors this agency works with throughout the Nation get j better acquainted with the re ! sources of the Research Triangle we will find that our state will play a major role in our Na tion’s total space program. One of the criticisms we of ten hear of the space program is the fact that it has little, if any, practical use. It is true xnat up until this time there has been relatively little application of the knowl edge we have developed in our space program to non-space pur poses.
