The Machine Vs. The People:
We tried to - - understand a

Which came first, the wedding
ring or the engagement ring?
Historians are still probing back
into wedding lore and. are stll
disagreeing among themselves.
Regardless of the uncertainty
however, the fact is that at va
rious times and in many lands a
single ring served ’ a dual pur
pose. First it symbolized the be
trothal of the loving copple and
at the wedding ceremony latei
the actual sealing of the pact.
Towards the. end of the 15th
century diamond-set engage
ment rings had become popular
and two centuries later had
come into fairly ' general use.
All through the centuries gold
was held in high esteem, but re
cently it has been replaced to
some extent by platinum. The
rse of two rings, one for be
trothal and the other for the
'-edding, can be traced back to
the time when it was the cus
tom to give the prospective
bride a ring at the time when
marriage was proposed and in
line with ecclesiastical require
ments the marriage was delay
ed until some time later. When
the wedding took place in order
that the bridegroom might sig
nify that his betrothal assurances
were still valid, he then pre
sented another ring, a simple
one—“plain band of holy union.”
Household Hint*:
After washing gloves, (hold
them under the cold water fau
cet for rinsing The fingers are
inflated with water and then
[they drip dry on the line with
out twisted fingers.
Give your daughter’s paper
dolls a coat of clear nail polish
and they won’t tear.
Last week. in the recipe for hot
rolls the salt was omitted—l
tbsp. of salt should be added to
the liquid.
Peanut Butter Drops
1 cup cake flour, 1 tsp. bak
ing powder, Vz cup creamy pea
nut butter, V* cup butter, 2 eggs,
1 cup raisins or chapped dates,
Vi cup milk. Sift flour, sift
again with baking powder. Mix
peanut butter, shortening and
sugar thoroughly. Add beaten
eggs and beat well. Add chop
ped raisins or dates alternately
with flour and milk. Blend
well. Drop from teaspoon an
cookie sheet. Bake in'3so deg.
oven. 10 minutes.
The legitimate aim of criticism
is to direct attention to the ex
cellent.
