According to Chief Griffin, in the past the Police Department has acted more or less as a col lecting agency for the various courts, such as allowing defend ants to come into police head quarters and submit to various violations of law. In this pro cedure the police collect the money, give receipts from the various justices of peace receipt books, placing the money in en velopes showing amounts collect ed, keeping records and amounts of money that come into their hands, then turning this money over to the proper justice of the peace at some later date, seeing to it that each justice of the peace gives proper credit as -the money is turned over to him. In short, says Chief Griffin, the Police Department is doing the general office work that should be done by each justice of the peace. Mr. Gardner says that the new method will be of great benefit to the Police Department and PAGE THREE I—SECTION ONI will put an end to the type of complaints recently received from the Governor’s office.
