Arehie F. Hughes Completes Training Private Archie F. Hughes, 22, i&on of Mr. and Mrs. C. f Hughes of Route 1, Merry .‘Hill, and husband of Mrs. Vickie Hughes of Merry Hill, will com plete his basic combat training at Port Jackson, S. C., on Sep tember 11. This is the first phase of his active duty train ing and a part of the obligation he incurred upon entering the service-. , While assigned to Company E, 10th Battalian, 2nd Training Bri gade of this Infantry Training Center, he has been introduced to a wide variety of infantry skills, along with intensive phy sical conditioning. He attended classes in the tradition of the service, character guidance, and the- role of the Army in the world today. Fort Jackson uses the U. S. Army’s Trainfire Method of teaching rifle marksmanship. Under simulated battle condi tions, the trainee fires at pop-up (targets at unknown distances on terrain which duplicates combat areas. ' Basic training is climaxed by a graduation review before Brig adier General Gines Perez, com manding general of Fort Jack sen. Outstanding trainees are recognized in the ceremony that is open to parents and invited gbats. Private Hughes is a member of the North Carolina National Guard, Co. A, Windsor, N. C. He is a graduate of Colerain High School. This Is The Life By DONALD R. THOMAS f I ■ . ■■ THE BLOOD ON THE DOORPOST 1 Take your Bible and turn with me to the 12th chapter of Exo- .j dus. “Now Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, had refused to let the Israelites go. God has already sent nine- terrible plagues on Egypt. Moses told the people to take a perfect lamb and kill it and take the blood and strike it on the doorposts of the house. Take the meat and roast and eat it and be ready to travefe 4 At * midnight, there rose a great - cry in all Egypt. All of the first bom of the Egyptians, the people and their livestock had died.” This disaster passed over the Israelites. Why, because the ideath angel saw the blood of ■’'the lamb on the door, Now Jesus is the lamb—who shed His blood so we may be saved. Are you saved? Have yop been born again or been washed in the blood of the lamb? Please, bro ther or sister, don’t be like the Egyptians. Christ is coming back for His saints. Are you ready to meet Him when- He comes? Is the blood on your heart door when the angel comes, so He will pass over you? The Bible says: “When I see the blood, I will pass oyer you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you.” —Exodus 12:13. Memory Selection: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own under standing. In ail. thy ways ac- j knowledge him, and- he- 1 shall di rect thy paths.” (Prov. 3:5-6) Lesson Text: 1 Samuel 1-7 In keeping with the' theme of our present unit—“ God Stands by His People”—the emphasis of our study continues to be upon God’s work through human in struments. In our lesson for to- 1 day, we see how a praying mother and an aged priest be come God’s instruments through whom Israel was given a leader whose ministry was to have far-1 reaching effects on the destiny; of that nation. The meeting of the venerable Eli and Hannah took place in i the temple, where Hannah was praying to God, voicing her deep yearning for a son. Blessed and comforted by Eli, Hannah re- j turned to her home in the coun-! try, where she continued to pray for her heart’s desire, promising that if her wish were granted, j she would dedicate the son’s life to service in the Master’s cause, j And, when, in due course, Hannah’s prayers were answered, I when the child became of age, i she fulfilled her promise to the! Lord. Taken to the temple, and put under the care of Eli, the I child Samuel waxed strong and I good in the eyes of God and of ( the populace. He ruled as a judge over the people, and prov- 1 ed to be an able statesman, well, informed on all issues, and fair and impartial in his judicial de- 1 cisions. He traveled extensively, j enjoying the confidence and in spect of the people, and he ixf?* Colonial Motor Co. of Edenton BUICK - OLDS - PONTIAC CMC TRUCKS Belk - Tyler’s EDEN TON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. He was an active religious leader of his times, as a result of his early religious training and back ground. Looking deeper into the lesson i we are studying, we see that the j good exercised by Samuel’s life on earth had its beginnings in his home life. A loving, dedi cated, deeply religious woman, Hannah saw in her son a won derful gift from God, to be lov ed and cherished mightily —a ! precious vessel entrusted in her care until such time as God call ed him to serve His divine pur poses. This fact is illustrated by 1 the fact that, in accordance with her promise before the child was born, she took him to the tem ple when he became of suitable ‘ age . . . there to receive further j religious instruction. There was ; nothing grasping, or greedy, or | self-seeking in Hannah’s concept of motherhood. I Herein can lie a lesson for all parents and for all, children who will one day become par ents. In homes where parents 1 are indifferent to their own spir itual needs, and to those of their children, delinquency and crime have a fertile breeding ground. | But where the church plays an active part in family life —there, jin those hemes, are found the students for the Ministry, the I evangelists and missionaries . . . | the Samuels of our times, with t his propensities for good, to be ’ dedicated to a needy world. I The influence of religion on I the life of a nation is aptly il lustrated by the life of Samuel. ' Circumstances, it is true, may be I vastly different today from those that existed in Biblical times. But, essentially, the lesson re ' mains the same. For it is into | the world of men and their ' needs that the religious homes | Continued on Page 6, Section 2 ! Edenton Savings & Loan ♦L.
