& SECTION TWO Wilborne Harrell The Roundup The Negro Civil Rights Movement, in my opinion, has reached its peak of ef fectiveness. The crest of the wave has broken, and all that is undertaken now, every march, every sit-in, every demonstration will be y anti-climax. The Civil Rights leaders have already engen dered enough momentum to . carry the Negroes’ bid for ' equal rights to a final and satisfying conclusion, to com plete victory. Favorable leg islation has been passed, public opinion has been aroused. Now it only re mains for the Negro to hold the ground he has won and not alienate further concess ions that certainly will be 1DUI& 1 DAY TO 2 WEEKS ■ GUARANTEED HOTEL ROOMS ■ ADMISSIONS-SIGHTSEEING ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION ■ 3-DAYS IN NEW YORK ONLY $54.35 FROM EDEN‘TO\' SEE YOUR T RAILWAYS AGENT AT EDENTON or VX/rite or Phone Trail ways Travel Bureau Corp. 1201 S Blount St, Raleigh, N C. This is not a plug for Pepsi-Cola, but I don’t real ly “come alive” until Spring makes her colorful, warm and friendly appearance. I merely hibernate during the winter months. The highlight of the Wo man’s Club art show held recently in the Barker house was the work of Dale El- Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina 27932 Thursday, May 20, 1965. Lewis S. Pierce Dies in Hospital Funeral services were held Tuesday for Lewis Sutton Pierce, 77, of Colerain. Mr. Pierce, a retired farm er, died at 7:25 A. M., Mon day at Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor. He had been ill for only a short while. A native of Bertie County, Mr. Pierce was a lifelong resident of Colerain. He was married to Fanny Daniles, who preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, J. G. Pierce of Colerain and D. Ford Pierce of Merry Hill; two daughters, Mrs. George Cobb of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Bennie Brown of Norfolk, Va., and 10 grandchildren. Rev. Henry Huggins of ficiated at the funeral ser vices which were held at Bethany Baptist Church of which Mr. Pierce was a member. Burial was in Hill crest Cemetery in Colerain. Williford Funeral Home was in charge" of arrange ments. liott. Her work was sur prisingly good and shows promise. Although her work was not finished with the degree of detail I prefer, it showed an excellent grasp of brushwork and color for one so young. Maybe one of these days the name Elliott will become as well known in Chowan as Speight is in Bertie. One of the disap pointing features of the show was the scarcity of adult art. Surely there are enough artists and painters, even beginners, in Edenton to add greater interest with their work to a show of this kind. It couldn’t be they are ashamed of their efforts, and do not wish them on public display? A landscape was shown by Heywood Ziegler, Jr., a friend of mine, who never before in all his life had ever had a brush in his hand, or even had a de sire to paint. He got the bug from me, borrowed my paints and went to work. This was his first landscape and an excellent job. He certainly has nothing to be ashamed of, and I’m sure there are others like him. What we need now is an art show with all the artists in Edenton—young and old —represented. Remember— we can’t all be Rembrandts or Turners, or Winston Churchills. A book is more than type and ink, it stimulates and makes you think. Patronize your local public library.
