A familiar sound attendant to these disclosures of en closed varieties of goods, Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina 27932 Thursday, July 1,1965. hard and soft, was the squeal of the nails being drawn from the wood. A harsh, discordant sound, it was nonetheless sweet music to the merchants’ ears, a symphony of packing cases. And it was these same box es we youngsters considered a treasure trove; for there was an excess of such cases, and the merchants often gave them away. With the boxes we built castles, trains, log cabins, pirate ships or anything that struck our fancies. Also, the wood being soft, it gave itself smoothly and easily to the Barlow jacknife (an inde spensable article to a boy) and from such wood we car ved swords, pistols, hunting knives, guns, and all kinds of frontier and swashbuck ling weapons. For in those by-gone days when toy mak ing was not the precision industry it is today, we kids learned to make most of our own toys, especially toys of ‘his kind, which in most cases were better than we could buy. Boyhood imagi nation invested all of these things with a reality that gave a greater dimension to make-believe than kids en joy today. Today’s toys are but scaled down replicas of the genuine article, precision built and realistically opera tional. And in playing with them, the kids of today are missing that vital something that imagination clothes things you make with your own hands and skill. STREET SCENE Empty beer cans strewn by the curbstones, especially in the suburban areas and evident ly from passing cars. Is that r way to keep a city beau tiful? I have picked up many of these cans and placed them in my garbage oail and have encountered ithers elsewhere. An ordi nance should be passed with i stiff penalty, making it il 'eyal to toss beer cans, whis key bottles or such contain ers from moving vehicles — and the guilty motorist pros ;cuted if he can be caugnt.
