Broad Street Bulletin
By KATE
Begin each day with cheerfulness
And you’ll find that those you meet
Will try to match your happy mood
As they walk along the street.
Instead of a frown when you’re out on the town
Smile! And the blues you’ll defeat.
I noticed several times
this week how beautiful and
calm the bay was, almost
like a mirror. There were
quite a few small boats
fishing for white perch
which made me want to stop
everything and go fishing
ngtu that minute. It also
made me think of the ocean
last week, which was very
calm and clear and how
rough it can become in a
storm. The analogy of stormy
and calm waters and life is
quite evident.
Sometimes even advertis
ing signs are pretty. For in
stance, the new revolving
Texaco sign at the corner of
Broad and Church Streets.
I received a letter from
Miss Lena Jones last week
telling us that she would b<
home around the 20th, which
reminds us that things wn
get back to normal again in
the starting of school. It
sure will be nice to see Miss
Lena again, as her cheerful
ness is a tonic for everyone
she meets.
I wonder how many of
you patronize the local li
brary. If you don’t, you
should, as there is so much
wonderful reading material
there. I just read two very
good books, “The Pillar oi
Iron” by Taylor Caldwell
and “Tears Are For the Liv
ing” by Margaret Bannister
Reading is so relaxing in it:
self-forgetfulness.
I just read of a revolu
tionary new concept in men’s
fashions, which certainly
will make a hit with the lo
cal humidor set. Cig a i

And as a special treat, an
ingeniously concealed pocket

a pipe pocket for Mr. B.)
A doctor in Illinois says
“Never swallow a sneeze.”
By stifling the “natural” ex
plosion, you risk a rise in
blood pressure which could
trigger a stroke, nosebleeds,
deafness and sinus infec
tions. This doctor advises
that you let all sneezes
come out orally in a blast,
risking a nervous breakdown
of family or friends.

yellow or orange.
Since most people hate to
clean up an egg when drop
ped on the floor, etc., I read
that if you pour salt on the
mess and let it stand for
about 20 minutes, it will be
easily swept up with a
broom.
If you want to boil a
cracked egg, just wrap it in
aluminum foil and boil.
Works fine!
Here is a new kind of
marmalade, called Mystery
Marmalade, and it is simple
to make and sounds delici
ous:
2 cups finely chopped cu
cumbers.
4 cups sugar.
1/3 cup lime juice.
2 tablespoons grated lime
peel.
Few drops green food col
oring.
M bottle liquid fruit pectin.
Pour chopped cucumbers
into a large sauce pan. Add
sugar, lime juice and lime
peel. Mix well. Place over
ligh heat. Add food color -
ng. Bring to full rolling
M>il. Boil hard exactly one
ninute, stirring constantly,
femove from heat and at
once stir in pectin. Skim
off foam, then stir and skim
five minutes to cool slightly
ind prevent floating par
ticles. Ladle quickly into
jelly glasses. Cover at once
vith hot paraffin. Makes
about five medium glasses.
