I hold no brief for the Ku
Klux Klan, but a point or
two may be made in extenu
ation of this organization.
We of the South are becom
ing too prone to attribute all
racial violence to the Klan,
all cross-burnings and bomb
ings. But the truth of the
matter may readily be that
the anonymity of the hood
and the great secrecy of the
Klan has given opportunity
to hoodlums and criminals
to take advantage of this for
wreaking personal vengeance.
This very anonymity is one
% Qf the things that makes the
i Klan dangerous. It is not
the Klan as a legitimate or
ganization, but the Klan as
a cloak for non-Klansmcn to
hide their nefarious acts.
And because of this we cry
"Klan! Klan!” every time a
racial crime is committed,
and assume that, a Klansman
MUST BE CONVICTED if he
is charged with such a crime,
simply because he is a
Klansman. We are in dan
ger of letting our zeal for jus
tice overcome common sense
values . . . Now on the oth
er hand, my principal objec
tion to the Klan is that it
has out-lived its usefulness
and its times. Modern socie
ty has no place for Brown
Shirts, Black Shirts or White
Hoods; no place for burning
crosses or swastikas. The
prevailing conditions during
the reconstruction days of the
South, that inspired Thomas
Dixon to write THE CLANS

modern life, or shouldn’t.
But yet the Klan has bor
rowed the techniques of that
ancient Klan, and, wittingly
or not, they have stolen a
page from MEIN KAMPF.
Adolph Hitler’s justification
of his actions, Nazism, and
the Bible of Nazism. There
in lies a major danger of
Klanism: the relegation of
the individual’s right, re
gardless of race, creed or
color, and the denial of the
individual the enjoyment of
those rights. Nazism or
Klanism, I see very little
difference between the two,
in this respect. The Klan’s
antipathy toward races other
than Caucasion or white
closely parallels Hitler’s
white Aryan philosophy, or
the supremacy of the white
race. I quote from Mein
Kampf (My Battle) by
Adolph Hitler, ‘‘Everything
that today we admire on this
earth—science and art, tech
nique and inventions—is only
the creative product of a few
peoples and perhaps original
ly of ONE race.” Which ob
viously, to any thinking man,
is grosser inaccurate. We
only have to look about us to
see the fallacy of this. The
word Aryan had many Ger
manic facets and interpreta
tions, but to Adolph Hitler, it
meant, simply, “ . . . a racial
term excluding Jews and Ne
groes.” Therein was the ra
cial philosophy of Hitler and
Nazism and my bone of con
tention with the Ku Klux
Klan.
