Who knows who created Zorro and brought him to fictional pro minence? I dare say, very lew. Back in the days when the pulps held sway among the lovers of well-written and interesting fiction, Ar gosy-Allstory brought out a story called, “The Mark of Zorro” by Johnston McCu-1- ley. It was a cne-siiot ven ture, but like Tarzan, Zorro zoomed'into popularity, and subsequent stories followed, until today Zorro is a na tionally known fiction char acter. McCullcy was a pro lific writer and created characters other than Zorro. A favorite of mine was the Crimsop Clown, featured in the old Street and Smith Detective Story Magazine. But the Clown never made it so great as Zorro, who still rides “out of the night” righting old wrongs and pun ishing evil-doers. PHIL OSQPHER SAYS: Don’t try to start at the ton you have too far to fall Reading over the list of Friends of the Library, I was struck by the prepond erance of women over men. Why? Men love books and like to read. Or is it be cause women have more leisure time to become in terested 'in books and read ing. I doubt it; I never saw a man yet who liked to read who didn’t find the time to indulge himself. So let’s see more men on the list. Can Edenton afford two modernized, first i:lass li braries? It is high time we face up to the fact that the speople wf—Edenton "are-iwt* going to tolerate one first* ' class library and one second rate library. We have eith er got to have two modem, first class libraries or one first class library, serving all the people. Now, which shall it be? Give me a book and I have a weapon to defend myself.
