% THE CHOWAN HERALD M . < Hl . i t-it sectioned Wflborne Hafcrcll The Roundup Today is LfttxJf Bay— the day that commemorates the toil of the sweat of the brow, and. the dignity of earning an honest living out of the earth,' the fields and the shops.Jbjßut time marches on are not what they usdd to be. I doubt if there is very much sweating and toiling among the workers of today. Even those laborers who perform heavy, manual work have such short wording hours and the pay is so great, the sweat of the brow smells like perfume. We' are liv ing in an age where wages are ever in shpascendency and workings hours grow shorter and shorter. We are living in an iage where we are ever “keeping up with the Joneses”; and our pay check must be commensur ate with theystrain of main taining this balance between status and quo. But surely all of this must sometime reach a vanishing point or a saturation point, *' because if wages continue go up, up, up, and working hours con tinue to shorten, shorten, shorten, we will reach the place where there will be no work and no wages. And when or if that happens, we will have killed the goose that lays the golden egg, for without work man ceases to be a human being and mere ly becomes a cog in a vast super-civilization. PHIL OSOPHER SAYS: It matters not what people may think of you—but more im portant, what do you think of yourself? The puppet show last Sun day at Hardee’s dredged up some memories of long ago. I always have had a little ham in me and have always been interested in magic and ventriloquism, although I have done very little with either —they still stand as merely hobbies. At one time in my younger years I was a great admirer of Tony Sarg, who was an artist, il lustrator and one of the world’s greatest puppeteers. But my interest in puppets, also, never advanced beyond the admiring stage. But pup petry, ventriloquism, magic still hold a fatal interest for me, and like all the other kids, I enjoy a"|!ood show in any of these theatrical arts. We live in a world of books—but are books a part of your world? Patronize your local public library. Edenton, Chowan County, North Carolina 27932 Thursday, September 8,1966. Aircraft fancy Lingers hi N. C. North Carolina is spawn- j ing a group of youngsters who are finding fascination \ in the skies—a “fascination” first put there some 63 years ago by two brothers at the little village of Kitty Hawk in the state. Tar Heel State children are expressing an interest in toy aircraft today that would have amazed Orville and Wilbur Wright whose “flying machine” took off that sandy peninsula in 1903. According to a recent toy industry survey, North Ca rolina ranks among a group of states which top the na tional per capita average for the number of aircraft toys purchased for juveniles. The survey compiled for Toy Manufacturers of the U.S.A., Inc., indicates that North Carolina is one of 13 states in a Southern group which purchase 27 per cent more toy airplane units than the national average, on a population scale. Commenting on these fig s, Jerome M. Fryer, presi dent of the toy association said, “The aircraft toy is one good way of introducing youngsters to our most mod ern form of travel. The value of this early introduc tion is realized when we con sider that by the time today’s children are grown, the air planes will probably be used almost as much as the auto mobile is now.” The average per unit price paid for aircraft toys today is $2.07, according to the sur vey, whih shows that boys receive almost all of these items. Most of the shoppers for toys of this type are between 25 and 39 years old, have children under 10, and fami ly incomes between $6,000 and SIO,OOO. According to the survey they do the bulk of their buying in department and chain department stores, Discount '‘houses, -and variety and hobby stores.
