i—A PAGE TWO BROAD STREET BULLETIN Kate Keep a smile on your face and a laugh in your throat, As you walk down the street each day. You just might get a chance to use them To brighten someone’s way No one likes a grouch, not even you. But I’ll bet you that nine times out of ten, if you give a smile you'll get one in return. Last week I asked about sweet peppers and I was surprised and very pleased to get quite a few, plenty in fact, to make the Pep per Relish-Jam. Mrs. Fred Drane who, by the way, with Rev. Drane, is trav eling, sent me peppers and on Thursday I went down to see Mrs. Edgar Pearce, who had about a peck of peppers—not pickled. Then Mrs. Maude Reaves _ also came to my rescue with a batch of the things. The relish is very good and I’m planning to give some of it to our Methodist Church to sell at our big Flea Society News Mr. and Mrs. James Bond, Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Nixon, Mr. and Mrs. Rod ney Harrell and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cross spent the weekend at Nags Head. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Moore and daughters and Miss Pat Reaves spent Saturday at Nags Head. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Wil liams and daughters spent Sunday in Norfolk visiting Mr. Williams’ aunts, Mrs. Willo Banks and Miss Louise Sitterson. Mrs. George P. Byrum left last week for West Palm Beach, Fia., where she will spend the winter. Mrs. Edward O. Smith and daughter, Rebecca Hart of Pasadena, Calif., are visiting Mrs. Smith’s Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mr—.and. Mrs.. .J e rxy f Holmes ' arid Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Holmes, Jr., visited Mrs. Jasper Holmes, Sr., at Norfolk General Hospi tal on Monday. W. H. Hollowell attend ed a Lions State Council meeting in Winston-Salem during the weekend. "7,000 pounds of peanuts in 70 minutes—at night!" Edward Vaughan, Murfreesboro, N. C. " Y °« work fast and well in all harvesting conditions. There have been times when we've used it to pick all night. One night, we picked 7,000 pounds of peanuts in an hour and ten minutes. That's really picking, I think. The 1500 Is a well-built machine; it has good engi neering in It." NOTIh Mr. Vaughanjs ■ form.r champion pacuwt frvwar es Hartford tiMfy, North Carolina. Again on Saturday we went to the beach to fish and we ate all three fish which we caught —two blues and one hog fish. We travelled from Rod anthe to Kitty Hawk —no fish. However, they tell us that after the storms, the fish will be plentiful— but I wonder where? One gentleman Til miss each week on my rounds is Mr. John J. Ross. He always had a smile and seemed such a gentle man. A great attribute to a good life. In the understandable absence of Mrs. J. J. Ross at the organ of the Metho dist Church this past Sun day, Rosemary Holmes, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. George Holmes, substitut ed for her. She is quite talented, done a perfect job with much ease and con fidence. When hunting peppers last week, a friend and I just happened to stop at Gib Perry’s and Robey’s Red Barn merely to browse. They both are used to women who are “just looking” and seem happy that you stop—even to being given a cup of coffee or a coke. I’ve got a “dry run” on recipes this week and I would certainly love to receive some new ones. Either call me or drop them in to The Chowan Herald. A Few Hint* To stop an annoying cough or hiccups, try suck ing a piece of lemon. Avoid fat fires while broiling in the oven by placing a few slices of bread under the broiling rack in the oven. The bread will soap up the dripping fat. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDRNTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1967.
