Although everything was
in an embryo state, plans
were proposed for the in
auguration in this county
of a monster festival in
praise of Chowan’s most
important agricultural crop
the peanut. The idea was
presented by Jimmy Earn
hardt at a meeting of the
Edenton Rotary Club.
E. I. Warren, former
mayor of Edenton, died
suddenly at his home on
West Eden Street.
On the agenda for Town
Council's meeting was a
proposal to rescind an or
dinance prohibiting U-turns
in the business section of
Edenton. Prior to the
meeting, so far as was
known, only one Council
man, J. Edwin Bufflap,
was opposed to rescinding
the ordinance.
After considerable effort
on the part of officials of
Shepard - Pruden Memorial
Library, the library be
came the proud possessor
of a volume of six books
from the Carnegie Endow
me n t for International
Peace.
The body of Thomas J.
Burgess, 45, who disap
peared when a bridge
barge on which he was
riding caught fire, was
found floating in Albemarle
Sound.

championship. They were
scheduled to meet Hamlet
in Wake Forest for the
Eastern crown.
Attention was brought to
Town Council that some
citizens were using little
discretion relative to pecan
trees along the streets of
the town. It was pointed
out that a very strict or
dinance was passed by
Town Council in 1932 mak
ing it unlawful to climb,
flay or throw stones or
sticks into pecan trees on
town property.
Rotary signs were placed
along highways to acquaint
visiting Rotarians that
there was a Rotary Club
in Edenton.
Enlargement and im
provements of the Edenton
High School became an as
sured fact when the Coun
ty Commissioners approved
a contract to four firms at
a total of $61,216.
The Northeastern Press
Association met in Eden
ton with The Chowan Her
ald acting as host.

on one of the largest illi

was hidden in the woods

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey
Boyce celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary at
their home on Oakum
Street and were greatly
surprised when a number
of neighbors and relatives
called at their home in
honor of the event.

Chowan County Commis
sioners passed a resolution
setting Tuesday, January
20 as the date for an elec
tion to vote on a $400,000
bond issue for the purpose
of making necessary school
improvements in Chowan
County.
As a gesture of good
will, Mrs. Charles P.
Wales began a movement
to send 100 pounds of tea
from Edenton to England,
an item which was ration
ed to the British.
In an apparent effort to
settle out of court the liti
gation proceedings between
the Town of Edenton and
the Hervey Foundation, to
which the town sub-leased
the greater portion of the
Edenton Naval Air Station,
David E. Hervey, presi
dent, released a letter
to Mayor Leroy Haskett
and Town Council.
Plans were under way
for the organization of a
much-needed Hospital Aux
iliary to reach every wom
an in the county. Various
organizations were asked
to name a representative
for the Hospital Auxiliary.
Former Governor J.
Melville Broughton an
nounced his candidacy for
the United States Senate in
the May Democratic prim
ary election.
What was generally re
ferred to as the greatest
thing ever done in Eden
ton was a Halloween party
staged on the playground
at Hicks Field.
A preliminary death
knell for carnivals showing
in Edenton and Chowan
.County was sounded by
the County Commissioners
when they promised to do
all in their power to ban
such outfits. H. A. Cam
pen and M. A. Hughes,
representing the local Mer
chants Association, appear
ed before the Commis
sioners, setting forth the
gambling which goes on at
carnivals and a general
unwholesome influence on
a community, not to men
tion the large amount of
money which is carried
away from town.
Meeting in special ses
sion, Town Council com
plied with a request from
Chowan Hospital trustees
for Dr. Frank Wood, sug
geon at the hospital, to use
Athol House as a resi
dence.
A goal of $6,000 for the
Edenton Band fund was
only S9OO from realization.
_ Aided by an unusually
rain flooded several sec
tions of Edenton to such
an extent that some fam
ilies were marooned and
cars stalled in standing
water, making it necessary
to detour traffic in a
number of cases.

Whereas Chowan County Board of Commissioners have given notice that
a special election to be held in the County of Chowan, North Carolina, on
December 21, 1967, there will be submitted to the qualified voters of said
County for their approval or disapproval, the question whether the qualified
voters of said County shall approve the indebtedness to be incurred by the
issuance of bonds of said County of the maximum principal amount of
$1,000,000 and the levy of a tax for the payment thereof.
As provided by said notice the ballot for such Special Election shall con
tain substantially the following:

buildings to provide hospital facilities and related fa
- cilities operated in connection with hospitals, including
laboratories, out-patient departments, nurses’ home and
training facilities, and central service facilities, and the

buildings, in order to provide adequate hospital facilities
for the inhabitants of the County of Chowan, and a tax
therefor.
□ Pqr A Hospital Facility Maintenance Tax of not exceeding
10 cents, annually, upon each SIOO of assessed valua
tion of taxable property in the County of Chowan to
□ finance the cost of operating, equipping and maintaining
AGAINST public hospital facilities for the use of the inhabitants
of said County.
