Commissioners Hear Bank Petition Frank L. Harrelson of Raleigh, state commissioner of banks, conducted a hear ing Tuesday afternoon on a petition from two local fi nancial institutions to op erate on a five-day week, Jteing closed on Saturdays. ” Although several people from the business commun ity appeared at the 3 P. M. hearing in the Municipal Building, only two spoke in opposition to the peti tion and a third raised some questions which would arise if the petition was approved. Alton G. Elmore, man ager of Belk-Tyler’s, said he does not .think it would be in the best interest of the town for banks to be closed Saturday mornings. While, Elmore said, there seems to be a trend in this direction, he does not feel the trend should move into Edenton. Elmore said it would not only be an inconvenience on the citizens but would anti* W%ear gasoline PORE FIREBIRD* CUTS ENGINE WEAR TO KEEP POWER UP Get better mileage, lower repair bills, a better-running car! Jack Evans, manager of Byrum Hardware Com pany, suggested that if the banks want to operate on a five - day week, they should pick some day other than Saturday to be closed. He said Wednesday would be more convenient for the citizens in the area. George W. Lewis, vice president, Peoples Bank & Trust Company, said be cause other banks through out the area are now clos ing on Saturdays, Edenton banks are out of touch with them. He cited other businesses which close on Saturday and said it is time for banks to adjust their hours of operation. Lewis said local banks now operate from 9 A. M. to 4:30 P. M., Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 A. M. to noon on Wednes day and Saturday and 9 A. M. to 6 P. M. on Fri day. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1967 Chuck Benson, assistant vice president, First Na tional Bank of Eastern North Carolina, supported Lewis in his statements. He added that the Satur day closing would benefit the merchant since it would spread the workload over other days in the week. Henry Quinn of P & Q Super Market said he was neutral in the matter. How ever, he raised such ques tions as dealing with night deposits and obtaining change. The decision of the com missioner is expected in the near future.
