•—A PAGE TWO Morgan Against Attorney Gen. RALEIGH State Sena tor Robert Morgan of Lil lington announced here Wednesday that he will be a candidate for North Ca rolina’s Attorney General. Referring to the office as “the people's attorney,” Morgan's announcement set the stage for a lively pri mary contest for the office. Incumbent Wade Bruton has already paid his filing fee to run again. Both Morgan and Bruton are Democrats. Morgan’s statement that he will seek the office came as no surprise. He told a press conference at the Sir Walter Hotel that he had been considering the race for some time. “North Carolinians are demanding as never be fore,'' 'he told reporters, • “more vigorous, more im aginative, more aggressive and more capable leader ship. I am challenged by their demands and thus moved to seek this of fice.” He pledged, if elected, to “exert this kind Os lead- Concert Slated By State Band High school students in Edenton - Chowan Schools will attend a concert by the N. C. State University Symphonic Band at Ernest A. Swain Elementary School auditorium at 2 P. M. today (Thursday). This is another in a series of fine arts pro grams arranged by the Arts and Humanities De partment, headed by Mrs. James Partin. The 78 - member band played in Jacksonville and Washington Wednesday and goes from Edenton to Ches apeake, Va., for an 8 P. M. concert at Indian River High School. The 1968 concert tour ends at 2 P. M. Friday at Park View High School in South Hill, Va. John T. Caldwell, N. C. State chancellor, said the “Symphonic Band is an example of one of the many groups which help make college life at N. C. State - more rewarding. FBONE 452-2144 crship myself and demand it as well from all those who serve on the staff of the Attorney General or in the agencies for which he is responsible.” Morgan has served five terms in the North Carolina Senate and was elected president pro tern by that body for the 1965 session. As chairman of East Carolina University’s board of trustees, Morgan was the legislative leader who carried the ball for that institution’s bid for university status. His name is also closely linked with efforts for bet ter mental health facilities, jail reform and he served in 1965-66 as co-chairman of the General Assembly’s Legislative Research Com mission. Morgan gained state wide prominence in 1960 when he managed Bever ly Lake’s campaign for Governor in the Demo cratic primaries. Lake is now a member of the State Supreme Court. Morgan, a native of Har nett County, is a practic ing attorney. He was first elected to public office in 1950 when Harnett voters elected him as clerk of Su perior Court while he was still in law school at Wake Forest University. He com pleted law school a month after his victory at the polls. He was first elected to the State Senate in 1955, and he served in the 1959, 1963, 1965 and 1967 ses sions. He is married to the former Katie Earle Owen of Roseboro and they have two daughters, Margaret Anne, age 6; Mary Eliza beth, age 5, and a foster son, Rupert, age 17.
