GENE ASHLEY on the THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, MAY t, INK. LETTER TO THE EDITOR There have been no known, cases of animal rabies in Pasquotank-Per quimans - Camden - Chowan Health District for many years. This is welcome news, perhaps the area has just been lucky and that the area could have an out break among its dog popu lation at any time. Our Health District is lo cated in tourist area and at times dogs are left be hind, which may become stray or wild dogs. It is the unwanted stray dogs that are never vaccinated and are most susceptible when rabies is introduced into an area. Rabies could become a public health problem in our counties. When rabies strikes in a community, it is often too late to protect your dog. The bite of a rabid animal may cause pain and suffering for hu mans and loss of valuable livestock. The public health laws of North Carolina requires that all dogs four months of age or older be vaccin ated against rabies. Each dog owner has the oppor tunity to contribute to a community effort with real public health importance by having their dogs vac cinated against rabies. Vac cinations can be given for one or three years. K. J. EYER, Sanitarian Supervisor, District Health Dept. Confusing It is bad enough that civilization is again at the crossroads, but this time it appears to be one of those cloverleaf jobs. —Times. Marshalltown, la.
