Amburn, Jr. Two of three incumbent members of Chowan County Board of Commissioners went down in defeat Saturday in the Democratic- Primary Election which saw a record number of voters go to the polls to cast their ballots. Chairman W. E. Bond, who has survived the contest with Clarence Z. Shackelford, a political unknown. Bond won by 54 votes, gaining his margin of victory in the two Edenton precincts, in the race for commissioner from the First Township. The final vote was 1.168 for Bond and 1,114 for Shackelford. David T. Bateman, seeking his first political office, ousted veteran commis sioner C. J. Hollowed by 99 votes. C. A. Phillips, veteran of several years on the Edenton Town Council, defeated incumbent commissioner Dallas L. Jeth ro and Cabell Pruden for the Fourth Bob Scott Scott Is Winner Lt. Gov. Bob Scott carried Chowan County and the State of North Carolina Saturday in his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. At 2:30 A. M.. Sunday it was report ed from 2.001 precincts out of 2. 1 0 1 in the state, that Scott led Mel Broughton and Dr. R. W. Hawkins by a good mar gin. Shortly after midnight Broughton went on TV to state that he would have no announcement about the future until later Sunday. Scott had 295,187 votes in the state to Broughton’s 201.585 and Hawkins' 106.272. In Chowan County, Scott held a 2-1 margin over both Democratic contend ers. The vote was 1.312 for Scott: h 29 for Broughton and 473 for Dr. Hawkins. Scott led in every precinct in the county. Chowan County went big for Robert Morgan in his bid for attorney general ship and H. Pat Taylor. Jr., in his race for lieutenant governor. In the second spot in the state, Taylor had 1.268 :■ 677 for Mrs. James M. Harper. Jr., and 158 for Frank M. Matlock. Morgar polled 1,374 votes to 689 for incumberc Wade Bruton I j ml,m J David T. Bateman ELECTION EXTRA served on the board for 14 years, Township seat. The vote was: Phillips. 1,176; Jethro. 731: and Pruden. 368. Another close race was for county coroner with incumbent Marvin S. Barh am squeezing by H. B. Williford, Jr.. 1,190 to 1,118. The other contest on the local ticket was for the State House of Representa tives. Seat No. One. Rep. W. T. (Bill) Culpepper. Jr., of Elizabeth City, in ( ho wan balloting with C. D. (Keppie) fer iell. Sr. Culpepper received 1.688 votes while Ferrell was getting 449. Upon until the final week there had been little discussion of the local races, with the state governor’s nomination gaining the spotlight. However, a lot of excitement was generated around the Chowan County Court H°use Saturday night as the returns trickled in. Shackelford led Bond by more than 100 votes in Yeopim. Center Hill. Ward ville and Rocky Hock. Bond made a good showing in the Edenton boxes to capture a four-year term on the five member board. Hollowell was on the block vote ticket but Bateman rolled up such a lead in the rural boxes that the incumbent was unable to overcome it. The only two precincts Hollowell carried were in Edenton but the difference of the vote in these two boxes \vas not sufficient to close the gap. Mrs. Pruden was on the block vote ballot but Phillips completely outdis lanced both her and Jethro to gain a four-year term. Incumbents with two more years to -erve are J. Clarence Leary and C. M.
