Some say he leaves in August, While others declare it’s July, I say it can’t be too soon for me To bid good-bye to the Yellow Fly. He lights, he bites . . . with all his might, In frustration I want to cry; Why was this creature ever born, That harassing, pesky Yellow Fly! It really seems a mys tery to me at what, little time the Yellow Fly hangs around where does he -come from and why does he leave—all of a sudden like? There must be a reason. Have you noticed the colorful red and white pe tunias planted near the statue across from the Mu nicipal building? I saw Tish Evans planting them before the official opening of the Penelope Barker Museum, so I imagine they were sponsored by the Woman’s Club. By the way, isn’t Tish a pretty asset to this community? I don’t usually like rainy weather, but as I write this, a cqijl breeze is com MS/jp^EßßOam 1969 | Si * ~^~, wW? Th. FONTANA . Here’s hoping and praying that Wilborne with his wonderful philosophy will be given the courage and strength to win his way back to health. It pleases me very much when I hear from someone out of town who reads this column and takes the time to write a note to me. Such was my privilege in receiv ing a short letter from Mrs. Marguerite Howell of New port News, Va. She in m CHOWAN HDULI, KDKNTON, NOBIH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, JULY 11, IMS eluded the following poem in her letter, which I know will interest you who have had pets killed by hit and run drivers. Thanks, Marguerite, it was so nice to hear from you. I WONDER I wonder if Christ had a little brown dog, All curly and wooly like mine, With two silky ears and a nose round and wet, And two eyes, round and tender, that shine. I’m sure if He had, that that little brown dog Knew right from the first He was God. That he needed no proofs that Christ was divine, But just worshipped the ground that He trod. I’m afraid that He hadn’t, because I have read How He prayed in the Gar den alone, For all of His friends and disciples had fled, Even Peter, the one called a Stone. And O- I am sure that that little brown dog With a heart so tender and warm, Would never have left Him to suffer alone, But creeping right under His arm, Would have licked those dear fingers in agony clasped And counting all favors but loss, When they took Him away would have trotted be hind And followed Him right to the Cross. —Ft. Seifert. We really had a treat Sunday afternoon when Pete and Betty Manning invited us to eat home made peach ice cream —it was delicious. Here is Betty’s recipe, given to her by Mrs. Mary Julia Par rish: ' ' 4 eggs. 1 quart milk. 1 can each of condensed milk and evaporated milk. 1 pint cream. 2 cups sugar mixed with 1 tablespoon flour. 1 teaspoon vanilla. Beat eggs and mix with milks. Beat cream slightly and add to milk. Then add remaining ingredients, along with one quart of sweetened peaches. Freeze according to instructions of freezer.
