Make Church - Going A Habit .. . ♦ SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON ESTHER SAVES HER PEOPLE International Sunday School Lesson for Sept. 15 Memory Selection: ’'Who knoweth whether thou are come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”—Esther 4:14. Lesson Text: Esther 1-8. The aim of this lesson is to demonstrate how God uses sincere devotion to restrain the forces of evil In an earlier lesson we pondered the question of why God—who is so good and so unutterably opposed to evil—still lets evil exist It will be remembered that the answer was that, although God controlled history (and in His hands is ab solute and final power) He allowed mankind to exercise the God-given gift of reasoning power with which to shape his destiny—thereby teach ing, rather than leading—maturing rather than retarding. We see another instance of this in the story of Esther, a Jewess who became queen in Persia. An anomaly, certainly, to see a member of God’s chosen people holding a position of honor in the pagan atmosphere of a Persian harem—but God’s work is not always accomplished in surroundings in tune with His purpose. Jesus, himself, was often called to task for spending so much of His time in the company of “undesirables.” But then, Jesus went where He felt the need was greatest. The status of women today is vastly different from their allotted places in Biblical times; in deed, it is vastly different from that of a hund red years ago. And while there have been evil women, there have been good women—women whose concern was for the welfare, comfort and happiness of those around them. Patient, wise, courageous women. Such an one was Esther. Esther, orphan, and adopted by her cousin Mordecai, was discreet, as well as beautiful. Her winning ways found favor with not only the king, but with many who made up his entour age. But, despite her exalted position, she still acknowledged the counsel of the older and wiser man who had taken the place of her father. Thus it was that she, following Mordecai’s in structions after the plotting of the wicked Haman had been discovered by Mordecai, saved her people from extermination in the land. She surely was not unaware of the danger to her person once her true nationality was re vealed. This, however, did not deter her, and she did not hesitate to put the common good of so many before her own personal interests. The spiritual maturity of Esther, in recogniz ing and accepting the responsibility of her posi tion, led her into a more abundant life. And we, today, can enjoy the same satisfying experience that Esther found, in service to her Lord and to her people. If we feel that our lives are drab and without purpose; if we feel alone and unneeded, then we have no one to blame but ourselves. BROAD STREET B Fh. 483-8122 - Edenton m- \ RsWil Granddad loves to fish. Secretly, I think he likes to talk about it equally as well. He spends hours with his friends arguing the pros and cons of “angling.” The other day I overheard a lengthy controversy about the best place to fish. Granddad ended the whole matter with these words of wit and wisdom, “If you ask me, the best spot to fish is out there where the fish are—so let’s get going!” This special brand of humor greatly appealed to all of his friends and it remained in my mind long after they had left It seemed to answer those nature lovers who claim that they can worship God out of doors as well as in church. For certainly, the best spot to worship God is where God is. Worship means not only moments of adoration and praise but also thoughts channeled toward God. The Church has the living presence of the Lord and inspires spiritual thoughts through hymn, prayer and litany. Yes, the best place to lift up the heart is in the house of God.
