Misunderstanding
On S. S. Reports
Although most employ
ers know how to report
wages for social security,
some are still not sure of
the special rules that ap
ply to domestic workers.
A worker must show his
social security card to his
employer when he or she
starts to work. The em
ployer reports the name,
the number and wages to
Internal Revenue Service
at the end of the calendar
quarter in which the
wages are paid. He also
sends a check covering the
tax contribution along with
his report. The reports
and contributions are due
for all household workers
who are paid SSO or more
in cash by one employer
during the calendar quar
ter.
There is some misun
derstanding also about re
porting wages of farm
workers. The wages of an
agricultural worker must
be reported if he is paid
as much as $l5O in cash
or is employed 20 days or
more in the year on a
time basis. This report is
made to Internal Revenue
each year when the farm
employer files his tax re
turn.
Employers of household
or agricultural workers
who have questions about
this are urged to contact
the Elizabeth City office at
401 South Dyer Street,
Elizabeth City, N. C.
